Burkhard Waap Obituary

BURKHARD “HERB” WAAP 1944 - 2016 Mr. Burkhard Herbert (Herb) Waap, beloved husband, father, son, brother and Opa, passed away Saturday November 12, 2016 after a strong and courageous battle with cancer. He will be dearly missed by his family who love him so much. Herb was born July 6, 1944 in Obervellmar, Germany to Albert and Elisabeth Waap. He spent his early years in Germany as the oldest of 6 siblings, helping his family and those around them. On their land they would grow food and raise animals that would be shared with those in need, even though there was very little to go around. He was at the top of his class for grade school, then completed his college degrees in Kassel. He was the best in the province for his tradesmanship in Iron Working and also completed his Architectural Design and Civil Construction. Needless to say he was exceptional at all of his crafts. He exceeded at high quality, large scale, complex projects and completed these projects at a fraction of the time that others thought possible. This he achieved with his smart work, creativity and thinking outside the box. He immigrated to Canada in 1974 and it was in Calgary on October 16, 1981 that he married Dolly Ramos. They were pleased to welcome their daughter Katherine into their family in 1982, followed by Mallory in 1988. Herb started HBW Construction in Calgary in 1981, continuing his expertise and his work ethics of quality, timeliness and opening up the possibilities of what can be created. He loved his projects and took great pride in his work. Projects that he was particularly proud of was the brick house he made with his bare hands at the age 14, the Frankfurt high rise building, the restoration of an historical building in downtown Calgary (A&B Sounds) and the Knox United Church which he held especially close to his heart. As a father he loved spending time with his family, taking drives to Banff and Lake Louise, enjoying the town and mountain walks. He had a green thumb and his gardens, flowers and bonsai’s flourished. When he retired he found great pride in researching and documenting his family ancestry which he accomplished, discovering the lineage back to the 1500’s. Herb is survived and lovingly remembered by Dolly Waap, daughters Katherine (Simon) Calnan and Mallory Waap (Keith); and his granddaughter Felicity. He was a great man with a giving soul to all he knew and even those he just met. Relatives and friends are invited to join us for a Memorial Service to be held on Tuesday November 29, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. at The Knox United Church, 506 4 Street SW, Calgary, AB. Voluntary donations will be used towards the cost of transporting his remains to Germany to be together with his departed German family.
