Charlotte Johnson Obituary

Charlotte Verna Heinrichs was born in Superb, Saskatchewan on June 19, 1929. Her parents were Russian Mennonites who had fled to Canada to escape persecution after the Russian Revolution. Charlotte was a bright and active child. She remembers riding a horse to Superb to get the mail, and the hair-raising ride home as the horse raced to the barn. Charlotte completed her education at Rosthern Junior College and went to work as a lab tech at the University of Saskatchewan, which is where she met Eldon Johnson who was teaching engineering. They were married in 1950, and Charlotte and Eldon moved to Kindersley, Saskatchewan, where Eldon farmed. They had four children: Lorna, Natalie, Kim and Andrea. Natalie died at birth. Charlotte enjoyed being a mother. She often said, “no one loved their children as much as I did.” She enjoyed helping Eldon on the farm and she often told the story of driving the combine during harvest. When Eldon entered politics and won a seat as MLA for Kerrobert-Kindersley, Charlotte was his constant supporter – hosting many meetings and dinners for his supporters. She remembers the day that Tommy Douglas dropped in. He was recovering from an illness and when she saw how tired he looked, she asked him if he would like to lie down for a rest. He agreed, so she made up a bed for him, and then drove out to the field to tell Eldon that they had a special guest. He didn’t believe her at first, but he finally agreed to go home with her. She remembers that for dinner that day she cooked poached eggs for Tommy Douglas, because that was what he had asked for. Charlotte encouraged all of her children to pursue careers that interested them, and she encouraged Eldon to return to university when he retired, to pursue his passion for archaeology. She prepared innumerable lunches for Eldon and his guests for ‘expeditions’ to the Sand Hills. Charlotte pursued her love for embroidery by starting an Embroiderers’ Guild in Kindersley. She and the other members explored embroidery as an art form. After Eldon passed away in 2001, Charlotte moved to Abbotsford to experience West Coast life and to be near her brother Ed. She made many friends and pursued her interest in bridge. She made many visits to Victoria to visit Kim and his family. In 2016, Charlotte moved to Innisfail, Alberta, to be closer to her oldest daughter, Lorna. She moved into Country Manor and made many good friends. She loved to tell stories of her early days as a farmer. Charlotte passed away in her sleep on January 22, 2020. She was always a kind and caring person. She loved to be organized and to have a good plan in place. She was so proud of her children and loved them deeply. Charlotte is survived by her sister Rita Rempel (husband Ted), daughter Lorna Jane Johnson (Terry), daughter Andrea Noel Johnson, son Kim Evan (Melanie) Johnson and grandchildren Jason Johnson and Erica (Jordan) Johnson, and great-grandchildren Juliana, Frederick and Josephine.
