Donald Racher Innisfail, Alberta Obituary

Donald Racher

Donald Robert Racher 1935 - 2017 Mr. Donald Robert 'Don' Racher passed away peacefully at the Innisfail Health Care Centre on January 1, 2017, at the age of 81 years. Don is survived by his daughters: Sherry Gross-Vetters, of Lacombe, Alberta; Lynn (Ronald) Whitney of Innisfail, Alberta; and Alana (Mark) Randol of Innisfail, Alberta; his brothers: Zared Racher, of Calgary, Alberta, and Mel (Linda) Auten, of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and his many loving grandchildren and great grandchildren. Don will also be forever remembered by his numerous nieces, nephews and extended family and dear friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Fay Racher (nee Dewald); his parents: Walter Racher and Melita Webb, his step father Earl Auten, his brother Jerry Racher and son in law Chuck Gross. Don was born on December 31, 1935 in Champion, Alberta to parents Walter and Melita. He had many adventures in his youth, and then settled down as a strong family man, spending the bulk of his career helping others - first as a psychiatric nurse in the Ponoka hospital, followed by a long successful career with Canada Corrections. He also spent a few great years living his cowboy dream when he owned and operated Horseman's World in Drumheller and actively participated in the thriving rodeo community there. Many years ago, he opened a fortune cookie that stated he was "sociable and entertaining" (which his daughters never let him forget) but he preferred the quiet of nature and smaller family and friend gatherings, and was happiest walking in the woods or along the shores of Vancouver Island in his later years. He was always willing to help anyone, and had the greatest smile to share. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Ponoka Drop In Center at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at the Ponoka Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Don's life. The family would like to thank the numerous caregivers at the Innisfail Hospital, The Rosefield Center in Innisfail, and Rosehaven in Camrose. Their kindness and gentle care was so appreciated. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society Canada. Heartland Funeral Services Ltd., Innisfail entrusted with arrangements. 403-227-0006. www.heartlandfuneralservices.com
