FYTEN, Edmund 1930 – 2019 Mr. Edmund Dennis ‘Ed’ Fyten, beloved husband of the late Mrs. Vera Fyten, passed away at the Olds Long Term Care Centre on Friday, October 25, 2019 at the age of 89 years. Ed was born March 4, 1930 in Swalwell, Alberta. He was the first of seven children born to Edward and Marie Fyten. The family farmed in Swalwell until 1941, when they bought a farm at Strome, Alberta. Ed went to school in Strome and spent his High School years in Swalwell. Ed was a very proud young man. In 1940 – 1941, he won 1st Prize for Baby Beef Champion/Grand Champion for Short Horn Baby Beef. Before he was able to completely finish his last year of school, he had to go to work, taking a job in Whitehorse, Yukon at the Air Force Base. Afterwards, he was employed at the County of Flagstaff; which involved building and repairing roads, grading, snow plowing, etc. He then went to work for his uncle’s Sawmill at Coal Camp, west of Sundre, Alberta, and eventually to a mill called Rogers in Donald, British Columbia. From there, he started with the Oil Rigs for McGann Drilling and then with General Petroleum working on Slim Hole and big rigs, in Alberta and Saskatchewan, from 1952 - 1963. Ed was very proud to receive his First Aid Certification in 1955 - 1957. During his time on the rigs, he met Vera Yvonne DeWitt from Wetaskiwin, Alberta and they were married on June 22, 1954. They followed the rigs through those years moving thirty-eight times. Their first daughter, Debbie arrived on June 7, 1955. Their second daughter, Brenda arrived on March 14, 1958, followed by their third daughter, Ramona on September 9, 1959. When Debbie started school, during her first year, they had moved seven times. They wanted to settle and raise their family in a permanent home; so Ed went into business with his brother, Elwood in 1963 at Bowden, Alberta on the east side of the highway, running a Gas Station. They sold Firestone Tires and had numerous distributing endeavors. In 1973, they built two shops on Industrial land, within the town of Bowden. By this time, they were busy designing Gooseneck Trailers. Whiteline Manufacturing was Incorporated in 1965 - 1977; building approximately fifteen hundred Gooseneck Trailers, during that time. It was the first, and oldest, Registered Gooseneck Manufacturer in Canada. They also built other equipment and machinery during this time, and ran a Tire Shop. The Tire Business ran from 1963 - 1998, providing thirty-five years of service to Bowden and surrounding areas. Other products they sold at “The Shop” included Mister Soft Drink; and they designed and built “Lifetime Christmas Tree Stands”. Ed was a Councilor in Bowden and then Mayor from 1968 - 1986. He loved Bowden and was instrumental in many of the projects that helped it grow; including the infrastructure that still remains, to date. He was one of the founders of the Housing Development Co-op, succeeding in five new homes in town. Ed was a founding Member of the Lions Club from 1973 – 1983; stepping down after a heart attack and receiving a five-way bypass. He spent a few years hunting with the Anderson crew and others into the Panther area on horseback, with some great memories. He made wooden rocking horses; the first one was for his youngest brother, while still at home. (He rode it until he was nine – ha ha) And then for family members through the years, and also to sell. He donated one to the Ronald McDonald House in Red Deer and also to the Children’s Hospital in Calgary. Ed designed and constructed a Totem Pole depicting his and Vera’s family that he was so proud of. He also spent many hours in his shop building wooden train whistles, that would be hand painted later by Vera. Ed’s passion was his family, along with fishing and hard work. He spent many hours on fishing trips with dear friends, catching piles of pike, often canning them. Ed wrote a priceless book of his life and memories for his family, which will be treasured for generations. Ed and Vera enjoyed three trips to Alaska which were the highlights of their lives. They built a cabin at Burnstick Lake, Alberta in 1971 – 1972, and enjoyed many family times fishing at the lake, with their children and grandchildren. Birds (especially crows) were a favorite for Vera and Ed, they fed them for many years at home and during their time in Olds, Alberta, when they could no longer stay in their own home. Ed was a gentle giant who will be remembered and missed by so many who knew and loved him. He will be happy being reunited with Vera again, as he missed her terribly. Ed is survived by his girls, Debbie Morgan and grandson, Travis (Jolene) Morgan, grandson, Davin (Carrie) Morgan (Gus and Finn); Ramona (Tony) Radau and grandson, Jason (Tamara) Radau (Teyanna and Brayden), granddaughter, Lavonne (Derek) Johnston (Carter and Emma); and Brenda (Dave) Beecroft and grandson, Stephen (Jennifer) Beecroft (Kole and Kaleigh) and granddaughter, Jenny (Darcy) Boyd (Haidyn and Rowen). Ed was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Marie Fyten, his wife, Vera Fyten, a son-in-law, Keith, three brothers, a sister-in-law and a brother-in-law; as well as numerous friends and relatives. A Celebration of Ed’s Life will be held at the Paterson Community Center, 2101 - 27 Avenue, Bowden, Alberta on Thursday, November 7, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. If desired, Memorial Donations in Ed’s honor may be made directly to the Cerebral Palsy Association at www.cpalberta.com in honor of his great grandson.
