Edna Good Obituary

GOOD Edna Lucille (Maurer) Good passed away peacefully on April 1, 2017, in her 90th year. Edna was born on January 28, 1928, to her loving parents, Elmer and Anna Maurer, at their home near Round Hill, Alberta. She attended Grand Forks School and Salem Mennonite Church. In her late teen years, she visited Carstairs where she met, and later married, Neil Good. They were blessed with sixty-five love-filled years together. Edna enjoyed her family and friends and was a model for all in how to welcome newcomers to the community. For many years, she taught Sunday School and was president of the Women’s Missionary Society at the Carstairs Church of God. She was an active volunteer with the Ladies Auxiliary at Chinook Winds Lodge. After her children left home, Edna was employed at the Lucky Dollar grocery store in Carstairs. She and her husband, Neil, served as church youth leaders and volunteered with the Carstairs Historical Society. In 2010, Edna and Neil were named as Rural Volunteers of the Year in the Carstairs community. Edna and Neil spent most of their married life together on their farm situated at the rim of the Carstairs Creek coulee just west of Carstairs. In their retirement, happy times were spent in their garden and taking trips together, the longest being a cross-Canada drive, and the farthest, a trip to the United Kingdom. Three years ago, they moved to Chinook Winds Lodge in Carstairs and for the last year Edna resided at Bethany Care Centre in Didsbury. Despite suffering from Alzheimer’s Disease, she continued to welcome visitors with warmth and a smile right up until her last days. Anyone who knew Edna, knew her smile. Edna is survived by her much loved husband Neil, her three children Vernon (Ruth) Good, Allen (Patti) Good and Freda (Chuck) Blyth; nine grandchildren Sean Good and Ryan (Kellie) Good, Katrina (Brian) Pike, Stephen (Ning) Good, Carolyn (Pete) Huffman, Michael (Tracy) Blyth, William Blyth, John (Genvieve) Blyth, and Byron (Caitlin) Blyth; ten great grandchildren Saoirse Good, William, Donna and Neil Pike, Simon Good, Harvey Huffman, Tristan and Dimitri Blyth, Avery Anderson-Blyth, and Barrett Blyth; sister Freda Voegtlin, sisters-in-law Mary Wright and Jean Good, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Edna was predeceased by her parents, sisters Lorene Wideman, Mildred Buschert and Erma Mast, brother John Maurer, brothers-in-law William Wideman, Gordon Buschert, Paul Voegtlin, Ernest Good and Robert Timmins and sisters-in-law Dorothy Maurer and Greta Timmins. Her family sends special thanks to the staff at Chinook Winds Lodge, Bethany Care Centre and Carstairs Home Care, as well as Dr. Niel Smit, for their compassionate care of Edna. Funeral services for Edna were held on April 8, 2017 at the Church of God in Carstairs with Reverend Harry Hoehne officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Alzheimer’s Society of Canada.
