James Alfred CALLAWAY Obituary

JAMES ALFRED CALLAWAY It is with great sadness the family of the late James “Jim” Callaway, 91, of Courtenay, B.C., announces his passing on Wednesday the 22nd of March 2017. Born in Portsmouth, England, the only son of Alfred and Isabella Callaway. As a young man he joined the Royal Navy, his first assignment was at the end of the war on clean up crew, Japan, at Nagasaki. Various postings followed around the world, with a brief stint building prototype fighter aircraft. A Chief Engine Room Artificer and later instructor he retired from the R.N. and emigrated in 1967 to Canada. From home base Victoria, B.C. he held many seafaring posts including the Coast Guard, Mac.Blodell self-tipping log barge and finally various vessels with the B.C. ferry service culminating in the Powell River run. He settled in Comox in 1976 with his wife Joan who ran a successful clothing store.  Active in the R.C.N.A. he was a fund raiser for the Naval Memorial on the Comox waterfront. Jim was a gifted individual, a fine woodworker, mechanic and model maker. He was an avid gardener who enjoyed classical and brass band music. He will always be remembered for his humour, good wit and infectious smile. He is survived by his two sons Malcolm and Peter, grandchildren Sarah, Stacey, Hazel and Megan, cousin Jean and aunt Ruby. He was predeceased by his loving wife, Joan. Cremation has occurred and a memorial will take place at a future date.
