Donald Granville Rogers
Donald Granville Rogers, beloved husband of Catherine (nee McTaggart) passed away May 26, 2009 at the Glenboro Health Centre at the age of 85 years with his family at his side. Don leaves to mourn his passing his wife Catherine, daughters Gail (Albert) Hamilton, Joan (Barry) Jackson, Jill (Ken) Vertz and daughter-in-law Trina (Curtis) Wytinck. He will be lovingly remembered by his nine Grandchildren, Travis (Carley) Hamilton, Trent (Kyla) Hamilton, Ian Hamilton, Alana (Garth) Bates, Angela (Ryan) Smith, Karnie (Corissa) Vertz, Kiel Vertz, Carson Rogers and Jaymee Rogers, along with four Great Grandchildren, Adria Bates, Cali Bates, Lane Hamilton and Charli Vertz. He is survived and sadly missed by his sister Audrey Johnson, sister-in-laws Orma Gray and Elva McTaggart, brothers-in-law Wallace (Audrey) McTaggart, Neil (Joyce) McTaggart, and Bob McTaggart as well as numerous nieces, nephews, friends and extended family. He was predeceased by his only son Donald Glen Rogers in 2003. Don was also predeceased by his parents Leonard and Edith Rogers, brother Clinton Rogers, sisters Lena (John & Jim) Steele, Dorothy (Doug) Elliott, Bessie (Stan) Malyon, Eileen (Harold) Jackson and by brothers-in-law Bert Johnson, Harry Gray and Roy McTaggart. The youngest of seven children, Don was born and grew up on Riverbend farm, ½ mile west and 3 miles north of Glenboro. He received his schooling at Patricia and Glenboro schools. After serving as a Paratrooper from November of 1944 to May 1945 Don returned to the home farm of his parents to carry on with his true calling farming. In 1951 he married Catherine McTaggart of Glenboro and they were blessed with four children. They enjoyed raising their family in their life together. Family was foremost and Don enjoyed being part of his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. Don enjoyed many memorable vacations with Catherine over the years. Two trips were made to England to the birthplace of his parents. He equally enjoyed the numerous reciprocal visits of his British cousins to Canada. His strong connection to family resulted in many trips all over Canada to visit various family members and attend special functions and reunions. Above all else, Don received the most pleasure from receiving visitors in his own home. Don’s work on the farm kept him very busy but he always made time to be involved in the community. In his younger years he was a member of the 4H Seed Club and enjoyed playing on the Patricia Community ball team. He served as a Director of the Manitoba Pool Elevators, Glenboro Credit Union, Glenboro Consumers Co-op Ltd. and the Glenboro United Church and was a member at the Raystone Centre. Don’s 50 plus years membership with the Masonic Lodge gave him a great deal of pride. He thoroughly enjoyed the fellowship with all his brothers throughout the years. Don spent many hours enjoying the sociability of others during his curling and golf games, not to mention his walks downtown. He equally enjoyed the solidarity of the outdoors while he cross country skied, cut wood and travelled the woods on nature walks. He loved the outdoors and was a steward of the land. He was a quiet leader among his friends and within the community, an inspiration to his family and a fine example of a man. His gentle spirit will be missed by many. He will always be remembered for his great wit and ability to find laughter in any situation. Live, Love, Laugh and Land. That is his legacy to us all. Funeral services were held on Friday May 29, 2009 at 2:00 pm in the Glenboro United Church with Rev. Mike Williams officiating. Interment took place in the Glenboro Cemetery. Following the service, a reception was held in the Christian Education Building.
