Isabel Mitchell Obituary

Isabel Elsie Mitchell, our mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother passed away peacefully at Park Manor Personal Care Home at the age of 93. Mom will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Jeanne, son Bill (Wendy), grandchildren Karen (Jeff), Brian (Christine), Heather (Dave) Susan (Klint), great-grandchildren Cody, Mitchell, Karter, Adeline and Elodie along with many nieces and nephews. Isabel was predeceased by her husband Bill, parents Mildred and Percy Sturton, infant son James Percy, brother Elwood, sisters Myrtle, Kay, Betty and son-in-law Reg Neufeld. Mom was born in Rathwell, MB and grew up in Winnipeg, attending Gordon Bell High School before working at Eaton’s for a short time. Mom and Dad were married in 1948 and made Transcona their home for 51 years before moving to Oaks North in Oakbank for a few years where they made many new friends. Isabel dedicated nearly 60 years to the Confidence Rebekah Lodge No. 40 and Rebekah Assembly of Manitoba, serving in many capacities over the years. She was also active in Explorers, CGIT, and the UCW at Transcona Memorial United Church. Mom was always knitting, crocheting or baking something for one of these groups. “Testing” the baking was always a highlight for our family. Mom loved to knit and would do so for hours on end. Every once in a while we would hear a “Oh Fiddlesticks” and the yarn would be pulled out and project re-started. Her grandchildren were always amazed that she could knit while watching TV, without even looking at the pattern, her needles or yarn. Mom enjoyed many years at the family cottage on Florence Lake. She enjoyed blueberry picking but was directionally challenged and would often get turned around. On several occasions a family member would go to help her find her way back when she wasn’t home by the appointed time. Dad always joked that he should tie a string to her waist when she went blueberry picking so she could find her way home. Mom and Dad spent a number of years wintering in Mesa, Arizona where they established another great group of friends. Mom enjoyed the warm temperatures and participated in many activities in the park. She especially enjoyed Bingo and would go to several nearby parks to play a few times each week. The staff at Park Manor Personal Care Home provided wonderful care to Mom and we can’t thank you enough. Your dedication, thoughtfulness and compassion are greatly appreciated. We also give thanks to those who visited Mom. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. Mom, we are comforted that you are in good hands and reunited with Dad.
