At the age of 6, Abel started working with his dad, Abel Sr., as a trapper. They would walk all the way to Traders Lake pulling a sled to get their traps and would head back home to Moose Lake.
Abel attended Moose Lake School and after he completed grade 9 he got sent out to Dauphin where he attended Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School. He then transferred to Frontier Collegiate Institute where he finished his grade 12 in June 1982.
Abel met the love of his life Eileen and they were united in marriage August 31, 1984 in Moose Lake, Manitoba. Together they raised 7 children and they lost one baby girl, Susie Martin, December 17, 1997. Abel and Eileen would have celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary in August.
Abel loved to play a variety of sports and he holds a record for cross country skiing but overall his favorite sport was soccer. He played for the Braves, Monarchs, Selects, 49’ers, Party Crowd and Falcons.
When Abel turned 19, he got hired on with the Moose Lake Loggers for 25 years. He then went on with his own logging company. Abel employed many men from Moose Lake. Another job he did was three planting, fishing and hunting. He taught his sons and grandchildren his skills.

Many people referred to his hunting grounds as “Abeliseek” – a secret hunting place. Clearwater and Brakens Lake was one of his favorite places and it was one of the toughest areas a hunter would go. He loved saying to his wife, “the cat back.” After he went on some adventures within the community. One of his favorite places was behind his mom’s which he called, “the spot”.
