Abel Martin

Abel was born Wednesday, February 20, 1963 to Abel and Dorothy Martin of Moose Lake, Manitoba. At the age of 6, Abel started working with his dad, Abel Sr., as a trapper. They would walk all the way to Traders Lake pulling a sled to get their traps and would head back home to Moose Lake. Abel attended Moose Lake School and after he completed grade 9 he got sent out to Dauphin where he attended Dauphin Regional Comprehensive Secondary School. He then transferred to Frontier Collegiate Institute where he finished his grade 12 in June 1982. Abel met the love of his life Eileen and they were united in marriage August 31, 1984 in Moose Lake, Manitoba. Together they raised 7 children and they lost one baby girl, Susie Martin, December 17, 1997. Abel and Eileen would have celebrated their 31st wedding anniversary in August. Abel loved to play a variety of sports and he holds a record for cross country skiing but overall his favorite sport was soccer. He played for the Braves, Monarchs, Selects, 49’ers, Party Crowd and Falcons. When Abel turned 19, he got hired on with the Moose Lake Loggers for 25 years. He then went on with his own logging company. Abel employed many men from Moose Lake. Another job he did was three planting, fishing and hunting. He taught his sons and grandchildren his skills. Abel also worked for the Mosakahiken Cree Nation as a councillor for four years. He was the founder for Wechewanis and Residential School (fostering our future generations). Abel also a School Board Committee member at the Rod Martin School for years. He also helped build the fish plant. Abel was also employed by Frontier School Division as a Project Manager for our new Frontier Mosakahiken School. In the previous five years he worked for Valard Construction in BC and Alberta to construct electrical transmission tower lines. He enjoyed his employment and made lots of friends there from all over Canada. Abel and Eileen generated businesses together such as Martin’s Taxi, Martin’s Take-Out and Wetekisewak Smoke Shop. Abel had a great personality. He was very outgoing, friendly, a humorist and a comedian. The greatest thing about Abel was he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, his kids and his wife. He always encouraged his children to complete their education and informed them that they could go and do everything and anything, and to experience the world. Abel was a very adventurous person and he strived to succeed in any challenge that was in front of him. He would not give up until he completed what he started. Abel had many quotes such as, “My grounds” about his hunting grounds and another one was “one by one” that he jokingly would say out loud to his friends. Many people referred to his hunting grounds as “Abeliseek” – a secret hunting place. Clearwater and Brakens Lake was one of his favorite places and it was one of the toughest areas a hunter would go. He loved saying to his wife, “the cat back.” After he went on some adventures within the community. One of his favorite places was behind his mom’s which he called, “the spot”. Abel enjoyed going to the Aseneskak Casino to play Texas Hold’em. After winning several games he would say to the players, “Ship ‘em” as he gathered his winning chips. Abel had several nicknames bestowed upon him, such as; Abelis, Relax, Millionaire, Relaxation, Animal, Abe the Babe, Namaypin, Abelis, Number 1 and his Texas Hold’em buddies also had a name for him “Bully”.
