Alfred Hiatt Obituary

Obituary – Alfred William Hiatt Alfred William Hiatt was born Wednesday, January 27, 1932 at Calgary, Alberta. He moved to The Pas at 10 years of age. In 1948, he joined the 52nd Regiment RCA at Esquimalt, British Columbia. He was assigned to artillery. He often talked of his service in the Reserve Army and the friends that he served with from The Pas and area. In 1950 Alf hired on with the CNR as a locomotive fireman. He later became a locomotive engineer and finished his career running the passenger train from The Pas to Thompson for Via Rail. He retired after 41 years of service in 1991, as top man on the seniority list. Alf came from a long line of railroaders. He followed in the footsteps of his mother, one of the first women in Canada to work as a CN telegraph operator and his father and brother who also worked for CNR/VIA. Presently keeping with family tradition Alf’s son Ken, son-in-law George and grandsons Kevin and Matt also work for the railway. If you do the math, that is a total of 253 years so far! In 1955, Alf met and married Lorrie Jaeger. They were married at the Christ Church in The Pas. They enjoyed 57 happy years together. From their union came two children Debra Sheryl and Kenneth William. Alf and Lorrie resided in The Pas and Carrot Valley for many years, and then lived at Rocky Lake North Shore for 8 years. They left the lake to relocate to Paradise Village at St. Anne, Manitoba. During this time they enjoyed 17 wonderful winters at Mesa, Arizona. They made many good friendships there and enjoyed their “second” home immensely. Alf and Lorrie stayed very physically active until Alf’s health deteriorated due to Asbestosis. Alf especially enjoyed curling, snowmobiling, golfing, biking and bridge. They also spent many years travelling and camping. He loved to read and could talk at length on many subjects. Many happy hours were spent socializing with family and friends. Alf passed away Monday, August 19, 2013 at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, at the age of 81 years. Alf is survived by his wife Lorrie; daughter Debbie (George) of Clearwater Lake; son Ken (Patsy) of Winnipeg; grandchildren Kerri (B.J.) Lajambe, Kevin Anderson, Kristen (Christopher) Werbeniuk, Joel Hiatt, Matthew Hiatt and Taylor; 4 great grandchildren Tyler, Jessica and Brandon Lajambe, and Lauklyn Werbenuik. Alf was predeceased by his mother and father Mary and George Hiatt; sisters Pat, Vel, Geraldine; mother and father-in-law John and Lenora Jaeger; brothers-in-law Earl Nelson and William Nickle. Prayers and visitation were held Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. at the Chapel of Hemauer Funeral Home, The Pas, Manitoba with Rev. Rebecca Graham presiding.
