Bernice Clark Obituary

Bernice was born Thursday, April 8, 1920 in Blucher, Saskatchewan to George and Janet Miller. For a short while, the family lived in Blucher until returning to Bradwell, SK. In her early teens, they moved to Saskatoon, SK. At age 16, the family moved to the homestead near Erwood, SK, here she met Harvey Clark. He was the love of her life and her husband of 58 years. They were married August 20, 1940 on the Miller homestead. She missed him terribly after his death in 1998. During the Second World War, Harvey was stationed on the West Coast and moved Bernice and their daughter Helen to White Rock, British Columbia so they could be near him. Their second daughter, Kay, was born in Vancouver General Hospital during their time in White Rock. After Harvey’s discharge from the Army, the family moved back to Hudson Bay Junction and then to the Clark homestead where they farmed until their move to The Pas, MB in 1963. During their time at the homestead, a son Tom and another daughter, Betty were added to the family. Mom was a dedicated wife, mother and hard worker, who didn’t shy from the many chores necessary to farm life. She was an excellent cook and baker who produced great bread and full course meals. Her butter made with sweet cream was a specialty that brought many people to the dinner table at the homestead. Most days it seemed that their home had a revolving door, or maybe should have had one installed. After moving to The Pas, mom contributed to the family budget by working at many things over the years. She babysat, cleaned at the local hospital, served at Parker’s Solo Store and finally served the public at Ann’s Shoe Shop where she enjoyed serving and worked well into her 60’s before retiring. Mom loved to do things with her hands, especially crochet and knit. Many people were blessed by the gift of a doily, hand made mittens, baby blankets or an afghan. While enjoying being a wife and mother, mom especially enjoyed her 13 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren and they enjoyed her. Mom lived a life of volunteering and was involved for many years in her church. She did many things over the years from teaching Sunday School, to being the Ladies President. In 1999, mom began serving in our soup kitchen and spent many mornings making sandwiches and serving the kitchen’s patrons. Mom served in this capacity until—at 87 years old—her back prevented her from serving further. Mom loved and served her Lord and her faith sustained her through life’s many curves. Mom had many tough times and illnesses over the years. Earlier this year, her son, Tom, passed away after a battle with cancer. Mom grieved his death deeply but leaned on Christ for strength. Her faith and love for Christ was lived daily and she was a blessing to her family and church family at Living Waters. At the time of her passing, mom was a resident of St. Paul’s Personal Care Home. We had received many comments on her cheerful and undemanding ways. She didn’t like to bother anyone with her difficulties and was afraid of being a nuisance so often suffered in silence. Thanks to the staff at St. Paul’s who cared for our mom and grandma. A favorite scripture of mom’s was “...There is a place by me and I will put you in the cleft of the rock and cover you there with my hand.” Exodus 33:21-22. Bernice passed away Monday, December 20, 2010 at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba, age 90 years. Bernice is survived by her daughters, Helen (Beryl) Jellison, Kay (Jim) Morrison, Betty (Ed) Olson, 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and countless friends. Bernice was predeceased by her husband Harvey; son Tom; 5 siblings and both parents. We love you Mom and look forward to our meeting again in our Eternal Home.
