Brian Haybittle Obituary

Murray Haybittle was born in New Plymouth, Taranaki, New Zealand, Monday, February 26 1940. As a young man he spent many hours tinkering in boats, water skiing, climbing and skiing. As well as following his father’s passion in aviation. After two hours of flight instruction he went solo, and then went on to gain his Private Pilot’s Licence. Soon thereafter he went abroad by ship to England at age 23. Tiring of the dreary English winter, he moved to Ontario, where he gained his Commercial Pilots Licence, and the rest is history. Murray started a career instructing at Midwest Flying School in Winnipeg. However with the rapid expansion of the company, charter flying took him all over Manitoba with Midwest Airlines. He ended his career with Midwest-Transair flying the four-engined Argosy, which introduced him to life and adventures in the high Arctic. In 1967 Murray found the true love of his life, June Morin, a nurse who happened to live in the same apartment building. They married in Winnipeg in 1968 and shortly after, their son Brian was born. In 1973 Murray was accepted to fly DC-8 Jetliners for Air New Zealand. This took his young family to New Zealand, and two years later Kerri was born in 1975. As Air New Zealand expanded, Murray moved to the DC-10 and later the Classic 747-200 Jumbo Jet. He also owned a small fleet of training aircraft leased out to flying schools. He was always available to mentor budding pilots who wanted to pursue aviation careers, sharing his vast knowledge and experience. In 1998 he became a proud grandparent to first Patrick and then Carmen in 2000. He has avidly followed their young sailing careers and was always the first to share _news of their great achievements. After 29 years, Murray retired as a highly respected Senior Check Captain in 2001, the following year Murray fulfilled his promise to his wife June, and they moved back to Canada, where he was content to be surrounded by his Morin Family and all his lifelong Canadian friends.
