Claude was born at his home on Larose Avenue to Helen and Joseph Joyal, Tuesday, September 28, 1920. He was the first son born after four daughters. His parents were so excited, they gave him a lengthy name, naming him Claude Edward Roland George Joseph Joyal. He grew up in The Pas, attending Sacred Heart School for eight years and then attending Red Brick School. He took a business course in 1938 and after was employed by Burns Meat Packers. During this time he met the love of his life, June Smith. In 1942 he joined the Canadian Navy, took his basic training in Winnipeg for two months and then went to Prince Rupert for five months. He was then drafted to H.M.C.S. Waskesiu in Esquimalt, BC. Claude came back to The Pas in 1944 and while on leave he married his sweetheart, June Smith, November 4, 1944. He then went to Halifax and St. Johns where he was on Harbor-Craft until his discharge from the Navy in 1945. Claude returned to The Pas and was employed by Scott National Fruit Company for eight years. He then worked for Dominion Catering for two years. He was moved up north with this company so he quit and returned to The Pas. He was employed with St. Anthony’s Hospital as a Purchasing Agent, until his retirement in 1985. Claude also dabbled in trapping in the Pine Bluff area. Claude enjoyed life to its fullest and enjoyed getting together with his family and friends doing a lot of dancing and carrying on. He brought a lot of happiness to others through his gentle, kind mannerisms. Everyone respected him. Claude was a quiet person but enjoyed teasing many. He was always up to something, whether it be splashing people with fish bowl water who were sleeping or holding a mirror behind one of the kids playing Crazy 8’s. He loved to dance and play piano which he played by heart. Many a party was spent playing “five foot two, eyes of blue…” and dancing the night away. June and Claude were wonderful dancers together and many enjoyed watching them. He would get a rise out of others by falling to the ground in a push up style fall and only placing his hands out at the very end to break the fall. He loved flipping all the girls over when they were dancing. Claude was the life of the party. He was a very generous and humble man and never judged. He accepted everyone for who they were and treated everyone the same. He never bragged. There was a saying he lived by, “there is no need to tell others what a good job you are doing, others will tell you….” Claude and June found a lot at Clearwater Lake in 1963 and over a number of years built their summer home as they could afford it. There was no road at that time so Claude and his sons Donny and Gary worked hard clearing a trail from the highway to their lot on the lake. They enjoyed many summers and some winter trips to their cabin and hosted many friends. Claude proudly served with the Legion Branch #19 in The Pas, taking part in various events and serving with his buddy Doug. They would always end up at the Legion for a draft after curling on Tuesday afternoons, even curling in July!!! Over the years, he was awarded a life membership to the Legion. He wouldn’t miss a “Levy Day” and was always raring to go on New Years Day to get to the Legion early enough even if he’d been out late on New Years Eve. Remembrance Day was dear to him and he proudly wore his poppy and marched in the parade. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, we all look up to you and will miss you dearly. You have touched many hearts. We are laughing and crying at the same time as you leave us. Because of Claude’s kind generous ways he has given us the power to keep his soul alive in the hearts of everyone forever. Dad you will be missed by all who were lucky enough to have met you. We’re sure you are dancing and playing the piano right now with a lot of people you haven’t seen for a while. We will always love you! Claude passed away Monday, September 29, 2014 at his home in The Pas, surrounded by his family, at the age of 94 years. One day after his birthday - he had to make sure he got one more party in! Claude leaves to cherish his memory, his beloved wife of 70 years, June; children Don (Kathy) Joyal, Penny and Bobby; Michelle (Bob) Martin, Troy, Trevor and Dawn; Gary (Kathy) Joyal, Jeff, Jackie, Doug, Chris, Ginger, Daniel and Jillian; Renée Parsons (Daniel), Riki and Houston; twelve great grandchildren and one great, great granddaughter. Claude was predeceased by his parents Joseph and Helen Joyal; brothers John and Fernie; sisters Helen Joyal, Antoinette Lauze, Jean Joyal and Irene Boyer; and great grandchildren Hilliary Renée Parsons, Braden Fuller-Joyal. Prayers and visitation were held Friday, October 3, 2014, 7:00 pm, at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, The Pas, Manitoba. The funeral service for Claude was held Saturday, October 4, 2014, at 1:00 pm, at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, The Pas, Manitoba with Rev. Jack Herklotz and Rev. Robert Laroche presiding. Music ministry was provided by Rochelle Rydberg and Claude’s granddaughters Ginger and Jackie Joyal. Memories of the heart were shared by Claude’s daughters Miki Martin, Renée Parsons and friend Murray Harvey. Scripture readings were proclaimed by grandchildren Chris Joyal and Riki Parsons. Following the service a reception was held for family and friends at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #19. In keeping with family wishes, cremation followed and a private family interment will be held at a later date. Pallbearers were Claude’s grandsons Troy and Trevor Martin, Jeff, Doug, Chris and Daniel Joyal. Honor Guard was the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #19 and the Knights of Columbus. In lieu of flowers, donations to Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #19, Box 478, The Pas, Manitoba, R9A 1K6, would be appreciated by Claude’s family.
