David Cupples Obituary

David Alexander Cupples was born July 5, 1939 in The Pas, Manitoba to Doris and Alec Cupples. Dad spent his childhood years at Elbow Lake where his father was a mine superintendent at Gurney Gold Mine. He moved to Cranberry Portage at the age of 8. As a youngster, he had many fond memories of travelling to Cranberry by canoe; because of this, he always enjoyed boating or being on the water any opportunity he had. Dad met Eleanor Cerniuk and they were united in marriage June 19, 1959. Together they raised two children; Shawna and Jason. Through the years, dad worked on and off working construction on dam sites. After his father’s death he operated Cupples Grocery Store. Years later he owned and operated Klahanie Campground along with a pumper truck, being his “#2 business”! His last years before retirement, he was a bus driver for Frontier School Division. He really enjoyed this job. He always came back from road trips with great stories of the fun he had with the students. There never was a road trip he didn’t have to sweep the floor from the sunflower seed shells. Dad enjoyed jigging music, his favorite was “Cotton Eye Joe”. He also loved playing the slot machines in Las Vegas. He also was an avid skater in his younger years and thought he still could skate until he fell and couldn’t get up. It took all of us to get him back up onto his feet. His favorite pastime in later years was eating gummy worms while watching TV, especially boxing and crime shows. He will be sadly missed by his family and of course, Rex and all the other community dogs that swung by to pick up their daily treats. Dad passed away unexpectedly, Sunday, July 24, 2016, in Cranberry Portage, Manitoba, at the age of 77 years. David is survived by his wife Eleanor (nee Cerniuk); children Shawna (Rick) Alexander, Jason Cupples; grandchildren Dustin Lysohirka (Monique), Shasta Lysohirka, Jessica Cupples, Nicholas Cupples; great grandchildren Parker Storey, Lily Lysohirka; sister Erin Ziehlke (predeceased Conrad); niece and nephew Kurt Ziehlke, Alexandra Worl (Carl).
