Dennis Overland Obituary

Beloved father, grandfather and friend, Dennis passed away at the age of 76 years, in St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba. Dennis was born Monday, October 23, 1939 at the family home in Flin Flon. He was raised in Flin Flon and graduated from Hapnot High School. He had a strong work ethic beginning at a very young age shoveling coal along side his father Ole. Dennis loved to tinker and upon graduation he attended Red River Community College to get his Auto Repair (Mechanical) license. He always owned a vehicle and willingly gave rides to anyone. At the age of 18 he began dating his soon to be wife Rita Brough and immediately became part of the Brough family. Dennis and Rita married in 1960 and proudly welcomed their first son Dennis Glenn in 1961. In 1965 much to Dennis’s delight, daughter, Lynda Joan was born. Dennis began his career at Uptown Motors, later opening a garage, Overland Motors, with his brother Don. When they sold the garage Dennis moved to Snow Lake to work as a mechanic for HBM&S. It was here that once again proud father, Dennis delighted in the birth of another daughter, Nancy Lee in 1968 and another son, Richard Ole in 1972. Dennis had a large group of friends in Snow Lake. He was a member of the Snow Lake Fire Dept. where he served as Fire Chief for a time. He was an honorary Legion member, and a member of the Snow Lake Curling Club. He loved camping and fishing and was always willing to take family and friends in his boat. He did all his own carpentry work. He renovated his home in Snow Lake, built his garage, later building his home in The Pas (Rall’s Island). It was in 1981 that the family moved to Rall’s Island where Dennis resided until his passing. Dennis worked as a custodian at the Provincial Building, Detention Centre and Keewatin Community College in The Pas. It was while working at Keewatin Community College that he studied for and received his Fifth Class Power Engineering Certificate. He retired from the College in 2000. Dennis was a great Dad! He was most proud of his children and grandchildren to whom he showed unconditional love and support. He had a strong sense of family making weekly phone calls to each of his children, brother and mother-in-law, Pearl. Always ready to lend a hand, never asking for anything in return, that was our Dad. He was a proud, loving, self-sufficient man. Left to mourn and cherish his memory are his children Glenn Overland, Flin Flon MB., Lynda McCallum, Gillam MB, Nancy Lucier, Brandon, MB, Richard Overland, Drayton Valley AB; his grandsons Justin and Connor Lucier and Patrick McCallum. Survived by his brothers Gary (Ethel) Overland, Flin Flon, MB, Donald (Roberta) Overland Airdrie AB; sisters-in-law Rose Overland, Calgary, AB, Beverly Harris Gray, Wpg., MB, Corinne (Bill) Gamble Selkirk, MB; and brothers-in-law Bob (Debbie) Brough, Flin Flon, MB, Melvin (Donnalee) Brough, St. Albert, AB, Kenneth (Robin) Brough Flin Flon, MB; as well as numerous nephews and nieces.
