Douglas Mayer Obituary

Doug passed away suddenly Sunday, August 11th, 2013 at the Health Science Centre in Winnipeg Manitoba at the age of 62 years. Doug was born Friday, July 20th, 1951 in The Pas, Manitoba. Doug lived his early childhood years in Pine Bluff, Manitoba and later moved to The Pas. While in Pine Bluff Doug was given the nickname “Cheenum” meaning “Little Man” by his Elders. He received his education at Sacred Heart School. Being the eldest son of Leo and Therese Mayer, Doug eventually left school to assist his parents with the up-bringing of his younger siblings. At a very young age, Doug began the Mayer tradition of participating in sports of which he excelled. He was an avid baseball and hockey player, loved to play darts, five pin bowling and cribbage. Doug enjoyed dancing, singing, jigging and whistling to old time tunes. He continued his love of hunting, fishing and trapping. A tradition he learned from his parents and Elders while growing up in Pine Bluff. Doug also challenged himself in participating in the Northern Manitoba Trappers Festival Junior Dog Race of which he won in 1964. Everyone who knew Doug knew he loved to exaggerate his stories. He would leave you wondering if they were fact or fiction. Doug enjoyed volunteering his time working at Bingo’s. He will be remembered by the Elders and bingo players for his teasing and sense of humor. For the past fifteen years, Doug worked for The Pas Friendship Centre as the Soup Kitchen Coordinator. He was very creative in that he could whip up a pot of soup out of anything people donated to his kitchen. Doug took pride in every meal he prepared and was very sympathetic to his clientele. Previous jobs included working at River Sawmills, and building houses for the Northern Development Corporation. Left to cherish Doug’s memory are his children: Ryan Mayer, Cornelius Constant, Jeremy Pruden, Albert McLeod and Kerri McGillivary along with his grandchildren. Doug is also survived by his siblings Yvonne (Donald) Balone, Marvin (Judy) Mayer, Donald Mayer, Dennis (Kathy) Mayer, Roland (Debbie) Mayer, Brian (Fran) Mayer, Linda (Wayne) Chartrand, Mark Mayer, Raymond “Puddo” Mayer, Kenny (Marilyn) Mayer. He will be sadly missed by his uncles, aunts, (great) nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. Doug was predeceased by his maternal grandparents Moise and Marie Lavallee, William Paynter; paternal grandparents Louis and Angelique Mayer; parents Leo and Therese Mayer; sister Marie Louise; brothers Larry and Michael; nephew Guy Kitsch; sister-in-law Karen Mayer; father-in-law Mickey Constant; brothers-in-law Derek and Ralph Constant.
