Edna Cook Obituary

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, Grandma, and Chapan. Peacefully with her friends and family by her side, at 4:03 a.m., Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011 at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba. Mom was called to her eternal rest to be with her loving husband Bill of 55 years. Mom put in a brave two month battle after her surgery at St. Boniface General Hospital in Winnipeg, but succumbed to complications at St. Anthony’s Hospital in The Pas. She told us that doctors were able to fix her heart but that they could never mend her broken heart. Mom was born Friday, November 26, 1937 in Moose Lake, Manitoba. Mom and Dad were married December 6, 1955 at Grand Rapids, Manitoba, ten days after mom turned 18. They met in Moose Lake while dad was visiting relatives. They then spent most of their married life in Moose Lake but also lived in The Pas, Cranberry Portage, and Grand Rapids. Mom loved to pick berries and pack special lunches for the outing. She was a whiz at cooking especially for special occasions like Christmas, Easter, birthdays, etc. She loved doing beadwork in her younger years, house cleaning after her loving children. Mom enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and chapans, and gabbing with her sisters on the phone. She spent her Sunday afternoons listening to Cree Hymns and singing along. During her last few days of her life Mom often talked about her childhood memories spent with her childhood friend Margaret Jane Campbell. She told many stories of her childhood spent on the trap lines and fish camps. Mom followed her traditional values and customs and thus instilled them to her children, grandchildren and chapans. She devoted her time in raising her children alongside Dad. Mom worked at the old Moose Lake School as a custodian. Her most memorable days were when she and Dad worked at the Moose Lake Logging camp. Both Mom and Dad loved to go camping at the Annual Spring Ceremony and at Flora’s Summer Camp at William’s Lake. Many relied on her for historical information because she had such a good memory. Edna leaves to cherish her memory, her children: Flora (Ralph) Nasikapow, Denalda (Eugene) Sinclair, Lydia (Tom) Bercier, Malcolm (Jane) Cook, Ruth (Alex) Ross, Doris (Phillip) Buck, Clarence Cook, Gloria (Kenneth) Ducharme and traditionally adopted sons Dave (Bernadette) Pranteau and Simon (Marlene) McKay; and her sister Mary’s children she considered as her own, Lloyd Martin, Gladys (Keith) Guay, Janet (Nicholas) Moran, Harry (Cynthia) Moran, Clifford Moran, Brian (Angie) Moran and Annie (Ron) Haukaas. She will be lovingly remembered by her sister, Doris (Rod) Young; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Rubena (Albert) Campbell, Anne (Leonard) Flett, George Cook, Jessie (Alfred) Anderson, Raymond (Sharon) Cook and Florence (Jack) George; Hazel Martin and Mike Zahayko. She also leaves behind her godchildren, Darren Campbell, Abner Cook, Priscilla Martin, Monica Buck, Isabelle Taylor, Nevada Kirkness, Marie Campbell and Michael Cook; and her numerous grandchildren, chapans, nieces and, nephews. Edna was predeceased by her beloved husband Neil William (Bill) Cook; parents Annie and Louie George Martin; brothers, Roderick Martin, John Robert Martin, James Martin, (infant) Samuel Rueben Martin; sister Mary Moran; mother-in-law Flora Cook; mother-in-law Charlotte Cook; father-in-law Neil Cook; brothers-in-law, Absolom Cook, Jonas Cook, Martin Jacobson, Harry Moran Sr. and Earl Wilkins; sisters-in-law, Rose Wilkins, Rubena Cook (infant sister), Eva Cook, Victoria Cook and Ethel Cook; nephews, Stanley Martin, Douglas Cook, Geoffrey Cook, Gordon Cook, Herman Cook and Douglas Flett; godchild, Lucien Nasikapow; chapan Falyn Ross-Whitehead. Wake services were held Saturday, February 5, 2011 and Sunday, February 6, 2011 at the Moose Lake Community Hall, Moose Lake, Manitoba. The funeral service was held Monday, February 7, 2011 at 1:00 pm at the Moose Lake Community Hall, Moose Lake, Manitoba with Rev. Clara Lambert, Rev. Donald McNabb and Lay Reader Hazel Martin presiding. Interment followed at St. John’s Churchyard Cemetery, Moose Lake, Manitoba.
