Eleanor Constant THE PAS, Manitoba Obituary

Eleanor Constant

Eleanor Roxanne Constant (Sandy) was born in The Pas, Manitoba, November 1, 1960 to Doreen Constant (who passed away at the age of 29). Sandy was then raised by her grandparents, the Late Isiah and Margaret Constant. Growing up, Sandy spent a lot of time on the trap line with her family. At the age of 6, she travelled to Winnipeg to have surgery on her right ear where she resided for one year. She returned home where she attended kindergarten at the Opaskwayak Cree Nation “Day School” which later became the first Band Office. Sandy received her education at the Opasquia School, Scott Bateman and Margaret Barbour Collegiate. In the early 70’s, Sandy moved to Leaf Rapids with Dan and Gladys Highway where she resided for a number of years. She returned to OCN where she gave birth to her beautiful baby girl, Doreen, (4 lbs). She then moved to Winnipeg where she met and married Doug Thomas Sr. and was blessed with two sons, Doug Jr. and Bobby Joe. At the age of 13 and without asking for permission, Sandy took Grandpa Isiah’s truck to Cumberland House. Sandy, her sister Alvina and cousin Lori enjoyed standing in the back of Grandpas truck as they traveled to the “garbage site”. She loved going to Barrows with Great Grandmother (Flora McLeod) to pick blueberries. Sandy loved shopping and helping people pick out the best outfits. Her places of employment included Swampy Cree Tribal Council Receiving Home, New To You, The Workplace, Bargain Shop, Red Apple, The Pas Health Complex, and the Nursing Home in Winnipegosis. Sandy spent 27 years with Randy Mercredi and during that time she enjoyed traveling to numerous places. She would not travel overseas but preferred to stay in Canada and the United States. One of the highlights of her life was a trip to Disney World with her children. She had her photo taken with one of her favourite entertainers, Merle Haggard during a trip to Branson, Missouri. During a trip to Winnipeg, she met Reggie Leach. She wore his NHL ring and had her picture taken with him. Sandy loved traveling in Northern British Colombia and Alberta where she loved the mountains and beautiful scenery. During the Christmas Season, Sandy spent day and night cooking for the Trappers and Fisherman during the Hydro negotiations. She also spent numerous hours fundraising in preparation to send her late Sister in Law, Beatrice Constant to Mexico during her battle with cancer. Each year, Sandy and her sister Alvina spent quality time together canning and baking, then they would deliver their goodies to family. Our Mom and Sister was the most generous and kind person. She had an open heart and always opened her home to all who came her way. Sandy had a smile that could brighten a room, you could never be sad around her. Our countless memories will never be forgotten especially her laughter, strength, good sense of humor and her love for jigging and square dancing. Sandy is survived by her husband, Randy Mercredi, Sister, Alvina (Calvin) Crystal (Melvin), Bambi (Gary) Children; Doreen Constant, Doug Thomas Jr. (Jamie), Bobby Joe (Francine) Grandchildren; Isiah Constant, Sydney Constant, Sarah Thomas; Stepdaughter, April Thomas Brothers, Ahab (Joy), Irvin, Pat (Harriett), Leonard (Cheryl), Ronnie (Marilyn), Don (Gaylene) and Sister, Bertha Aunts, Barbara Constant, Uncle Norman McLeod (Stella), Shirley Chamberlain, Marina Tucker, Brenda Goulet, Sandra Halcrow Brother in Law, Dan Highway; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
