Evelyn Jebb Obituary

Evelyn was born Saturday, February 20, 1915 in Cross Lake, Manitoba. Our Mom, was a very compassionate, loving, hard working, and humble person. She instilled the values of our people and taught her children how to provide for themselves. We were taught to be punctual, prompt, and committed. She taught her children the Seven Sacred Teachings of our Culture. Mom took in many foster children and welcomed everyone into our home. She opened her home for everyone sharing food and shelter. She provided wedding feasts for community members with her own time and effort. Our Mom was placed in Cross Lake Residential School at a very young age (4 years) and relocated to Sturgeon Landing School where she remained until December 24, 1932. She was under the care of Catholic Priests and Nuns. She was united in marriage to our Dad, Ernest Jebb on December 26, 1932 at Thicket Portage. Here they lived for three years. They then moved back to OCN where they resided permanently. Evelyn and Ernest were blessed with 14 children, five of whom died as toddlers. During her lifetime, Evelyn made her living and provided for her family by her sewing and selling traditional handicraft. One of the first beaded jackets she made was over 60 years ago for a customer in Winnipeg. Upon his illness, this man returned the jacket to our Mom. She then donated the jacket to Sam Waller Museum. There was also a very large old framed picture of the Trial of Jesus which was given by late Sam Waller when he was a principal on OCN Indian Day School. She also returned this picture back to the Sam Waller Museum. Most recently some of her grandchildren visited the museum to view her work and information. During her lifetime, our Mom also worked at St. Paul’s Residence. She worked closely with a nun who spoke only French. Mom was fluent in Cree, English, and French. She also worked as a teacher assistant with the Kelsey School Division. This was a very huge accomplishment for OCN and Mom was the First OCN member to pave the road for others. Our Mom was also a lifetime member of Willing Workers Church of Messiah. She also served as Treasurer for The Pas Reserve Health and Hall Committees. She worked along with Martha Constant, Agnes Ross, Barbara Constant, and other ladies who were members at the time. Being in the Residential School for most of her formative years, our mom did not know her family history. Much of this information came to her approximately 15 years ago. At this time she became aware of family members who she had in Nelson House, Norway House, and Cross Lake. All this new information was quite overwhelming and emotional for her and our family. Our mom enjoyed watching baseball, hockey, curling and various sports. At 91 years of age she competed and won the Senior Ladies Canoe Race at OID. In 1970, she travelled to Yugoslavia on a Cultural Sharing Trip. Here she proudly displayed her handicrafts. She supported her husband with his work, trapping, hunting, and fishing. She encouraged him with dog racing and in 1956 our Dad won the World Championship Dog Race at The Pas Trapper’s Festival. He is the only OCN member to win this race. As mentioned Mom was extremely proud of her beadwork and crafts. She made many baby wrap-arounds to welcome newborns into our community and honoring their birth. Mom also made her own moose hides. She entered many competitions with her handiwork both locally and out of town. She received and won numerous prizes and ribbons. Many of these were proudly displayed and stories printed in local papers. Mom was very strong in her Catholic faith. She encouraged her children and grandchildren to attend church. She prayed daily and attended church regularly until her mobility restricted this. Mom passed away peacefully with family by her side, Saturday, February 7, 2015 at the Rod McGillivary Memorial Care Home, at the age of 99 years and 11.5 months, 14 days short of her 100th birthday. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband Ernest Jebb; six children Joseph, George, Rita, Matilda, and Freddy and in 1995 by youngest son Vernon; sisters-in-law Joan Chartier, Elsie McGinnis, Christie Jebb; sons-in-law Joseph Albert Ross, Don Bahl, Dale Michaluk, Oscar Lathlin, Jack McLean; daughters-in-law Benita Jebb, Verna Jebb; brother-in-law Joseph Jebb. Mom was very proud of her children’s accomplishments and especially proud of her grandchildren and their accomplishments.
