Fred Shpiruk Obituary

Frank was born Tuesday, April 10, 1934 in The Pas, Mantioba, and passed away peacefully at the Flin Flon General Hospital, Flin Flon, Manitoba, Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at the age of 80 years. Of late, he battled assorted medical issues but remained true to his desire to be at home with his family until the very end. He leaves his wife Pauline (nee Petryk, marriage of 58 years), his son Rick, his daughters Tammy Gibson (Barry) and Cindy Smadella (Lawrence); five grandchildren, Shannon, Leanne, Tanner, Karlie and Kelsey, and two great grandchildren, Ryder and Riley; sisters Mary Demenick and Nettie Kowalyk. Frank was the youngest of five siblings raised together in a foster home along with his brothers Bill and Steve and sisters Mary and Nettie. In his early years he worked for Manitoba Natural Resources as a trainee spending many hours with resources travelling throughout the North. He later worked for the Canadian National Railway as a fireman. Frank met his wife Pauline in 1953 and is best remembered for the ownership of Cranberry Motors, a local garage providing gas, mechanical services and towing to the community and countless tourists visiting the region for over 18 years. Frank rounded out his diversified work life through working for Petryk Brothers Logging and as a security guard at Frontier Collegiate. It was well known that Frank enjoyed hunting moose and he fished diligently throughout his good years. He would think nothing of grabbing Pauline, his favourite partner and heading out after 4:00 pm boating 45 miles to Elbow Lake to chase walleye or 20 miles to the far end of Athapap after a trout! He was also relentless in the search of the infamous pepanky mushrooms each fall. “Pops”/dad loved to tinker; he could fix just about anything and liked to build bird houses, planters and other unique lawn effects. Frank leaves his family and will be best remembered by his legacy of values - hard work, be responsible, tell the truth and be a man of your word! To the end his concerns for his wife and family goes far to be matched. We love you dad, sleep peacefully and relax—we’ve got it from here. In keeping with family wishes, cremation took place and a service of remembrance to celebrate Frank’s life will be held Saturday, August 23, 2014, from 1:00 pm—4:00pm, at the Cranberry Portage Elementary School Gymnasium, Cranberry Portage, MB with James Hemauer presiding. Music provided by Frank Michell. Eulogy delivered by Tina Umpherville. Speakers Bill Kaplanchuk, friend; Cindy Smadella, daughter; Tammy Gibson, daughter; Rick Shpiruk, son. Luncheon provided by the Cranberry Portage Ladies. Flowers are graciously declined. If friends so desire, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3L 0K6, or the Canadian Diabetes Association, 200-310 Broadway, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 0S6, would be appreciated by Frank’s family.
