Henry Highway THE PAS, Manitoba Obituary

Henry Highway

While we mourn for our brother, there are others who are waiting behind the veil. Henry Highway passed away on Saturday, May 26, 2012, age 64 at his home in Opaskwayak Cree Nation, MB with his wife and family by his side. He was born on July 16, 1947 in The Pas, MB to Herbert and Irene Highway. His final days were spent surrounded by family and friends that Henry had touched in some small way throughout his very memorable life. As a boy, Henry grew up at Carrot River with his sister Shirley and later moved to town site. As a young man, Henry was very independent and could accomplish anything he set his mind to and always took great pride in all his accomplishments. After leaving The Pas Indian Day School, Henry started working for the Canadian North Railway in the Extra Gang. It was while working for this company that Henry met and fell in love with Mary Brousseau of Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan. They had a beautiful courtship and after capturing her heart, they got married on October 14, 1966 with Pat Constant as best man and Linda Spence as maid of honour. Shortly thereafter, they adopted Henry Jr. Mink when he was just an infant. As a newlywed, Henry took a job with his dad at Root Lake (Attic) so he could be near the love of his life and young family. It was around this time, Henry received his Heavy Mechanic Operator certificate which opened doors with Yukon Territories Mining Company, Snow Lake Mining Company, logging as a skitter operator; Manitoba Highways, Carpentry, Security Guard at The Pas Correctional Institute, Jenpeg Generating Station as a Heavy Mechanic Operator, Gravel Truck Operator, as well, tried his hand in politics, and finally developed his business in Sanitation while creating employment as well. Henry loved to travel to “the best” Hudson Bay to visit with his in-laws and friends. He also had a great love for his dogs: Hero, Balls, Coco and Buddy. It was so funny, to see him with Hero and Balls as he taught them to yodel right along with him! He could talk to his dogs and seemingly the dogs understood...and they loved him. Henry loved being outdoors, hunting, strumming his guitar and singing. He was an avid sports fan, whether it be watching the Blizzard play hockey or watching surfing the sports channels. Henry was also a committed member of the Church of Redeemer as a Choir Master and Vestry Member. He loved listening to Gospel music; especially hearing his baby sister, Shirley singing the gospel. His last message to her was to continue on with her gospel singing and not to give up on it. He also enjoyed spending time with friends and family.
