James Angus Millar Obituary

Dad was born Wednesday, April 2, 1930 to Margaret and Angus Millar in Lac Brochet, Manitoba. Jim’s dad was a manager for the Hudson Bay Company, so Jim spent a lot of his life in northern Manitoba settlements like Pukatawagan, Split Lake and Nelson House. When it was time for school, Jim was sent to live with his aunt Rhoda, uncle Tom, cousins Rosemary and Norman in Canwood, Saskatchewan. When it was time for the girls to go to school, Margaret moved everyone to Benito so that everyone could go to school. Jim stayed two years with his family in Benito. The family then moved to The Pas, Manitoba. The family stayed in The Pas for one year and then Jim and his sisters Barb and Jean boarded out to continue their education. In the 1940’s, Jim’s dad bought a house on First Street and Jim’s mom and brothers moved down from Nelson House. Jim finished his education in The Pas then went to work for The Hudson Bay Company in Nelson House under his father. Jim was transferred to Red Lake, Ontario. While on holidays in Nelson House he accepted a job with Taylor Airways in Wabowden. A year later, Jim went to work for INCO at Mystery Lake. Five years later, Jim went to work for Dunlop Exploration, then went to HBED in Flin Flon, MB. In 1964 Jim met Julie Clark in The Pas. He proposed to her but she said she wouldn’t marry him until he had a job that wasn’t in the bush. Jim soon got a job with Water Survey Canada in The Pas, the best job he ever had. He married Julie, December 18, 1965. Out of this union two boys Eldon and Jason were born. In 1980, Jim went on medical disability and bought Evergreen Lodge which he ran until 1988. Jim sold the Lodge and bought a small farm in Carrot Valley where he spent the rest of his days. Jim loved the outdoors especially hunting and fishing with family and friends. Jim passed away peacefully at his home, with family by his side, Wednesday, August 26, 2015, at the age of 85 years. Jim is survived by his wife Julie; sons Eldon, Jason (Treasure); grandchildren Ashleigh, Matthew and Callista; sister Jean Scott; brothers David (Gladys) Millar, George (Valerie) Millar; sisters-in-law Eileen Turner, Audrey Gareau, Lydia Clark; brothers-in-law John deHoop, Gary Clark; and many family members too numerous to mention. Jim was predeceased by his mother Margaret; father Angus; brother John; sister Barb Fischer; brothers-in-law Don Fischer, Orville Gareau, Leslie Turner, Raymond Clark, Peter Scott; sister-in-law Shirley deHoop; cousin Rosemary Howatt; granddaughter Trea Millar; in-laws Garnet and Bella Clark. In keeping with family wishes, cremation took place and a service of remembrance to celebrate Jim’s life was held Monday, August 31, 2015, at 11:00 am, at the Chapel of Hemauer Funeral Home, The Pas, Manitoba, with James Hemauer presiding. Music ministry was provided by Rev. Gary Clark. Scripture readings were proclaimed by Jason Millar (son) and Treasure Millar (daughter-in-law). Memories of the heart were shared by David Millar (brother). A reception followed at the Christ Church Anglican Hall, The Pas. Honorary Pallbearers were Roy Boyes, Walter Kroll, Ron Hayes, Richard Joy, Walter Koshel, David Koshel. If friends so desire, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 2B7, would be appreciated by Jim’s family.
