John Fulmore Obituary

Jack passed away Sunday, January 24, 2016, at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba at the age of 85 years. Dad was born Tuesday, December 23, 1930 in Macoun, Saskatchewan to Dorothy Howeship and Graham Fulmore. He was the 4th eldest of nine children. When he was about 1½ years old, they moved to Smeaton, Saskatchewan and after a few more moves they settled in The Pas on a small farm in the Carrot River Valley in 1940. Times were not easy in those days, so dad and his brother Bill supplied all the wild meat and fish for their family of 11. In fact, dad shot his first deer when he was only 12 years old. In their teens, dad and Bill built a cabin up in the wilderness and trapped to supplement the family income. Dad ran the family farm for 2 years while his dad was away working. At an early age, he started working in heavy construction and continued with it all his working life. He worked in such places as Thunder Bay, Ontario and Winnipeg rebuilding the airports. He also helped build the Flin Flon and Lynn Lake airports, plus many roads in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. It was while he was working on the Trans Canada highway east of Winnipeg that he met his future wife and love of his life, Anita Marcoux. They were married June 21, 1952 and settled in Lorette, Manitoba for a number of years. All their six children were born in that area while living there. Dad's work kept him away from home for long periods of time and he was not happy about that, so in 1967 he moved his family up to The Pas to work with his brother Bill in construction. This allowed him to be closer to home and spend more time with his family which meant the world to him. In 1974, dad purchased some equipment of his own and ran his own business, Parkland Construction. He retired in 1994 after working 44 years in heavy construction. Dad and mom purchased a cottage at Jackfish Creek, Clearwater Lake and enjoyed it for 27 years. Many family functions and weekends were spent out there with their kids and grandkids. Dad always loved the north and he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He always said “he was born with a gun in his hands”. He enjoyed many years of fishing with his good friend, Ken Crozier. After his retirement, he spent a lot of time in his shop at the lake, working on many projects such as walking sticks, canes and numerous toys and small furniture for his grandkids. You could find him in his shop all hours of the day and night doing what he enjoyed. Dad was a very gentle, loving and caring man with an enormous sense of humor. He was a very hard working, wonderful provider and most honest and sincere person. He was always there for his family, which was his highest priority. Friends could always count on him when needed, he was the “guy” everyone went to. “They just don't make them like him anymore”. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Anita; and their six children Brian (Linda), Linda (Ken Huculak), Pat (Bruce) Wotherspoon, Brenda (Bernie) Smigelski, Audrey, Barb (Peter) Symchuk. He also survived by 21 grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson and many of their spouses and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. Jack is also survived by his 2 sisters, Charlotte McInnis and Lula Cartier and his best friend and fishing buddy, Ken Crozier. Jack was predeceased by his infant grandson, Everett Smigelski; his parents Dorothy and Graham Fulmore; brothers Bill, Jim and Donald Fulmore; sisters Ellen Jackson, Margaret Cooper and Elda Price. Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, January 29, 2016, 1:00 pm, at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, The Pas, Manitoba, with Father Robert Laroche presiding. Music ministry was provided by Rochelle Rydberg. Memories of the heart were shared by Donna Fulmore, Corrie Fulmore, Linda Fulmore, Peter Symchuk, Bryton Misling and Bruce Wotherspoon. Scripture readings were proclaimed by Michelle Jones, Jodi Johnson, Hailey Misling and Andy Huculak. Pallbearers consist of one grandchild from each of Jack’s children's family; Brent Fulmore, Wes Carnegie, Lauren Wotherspoon, Graham Smigelski, Bryton Misling and Amanda Oakes. Following interment prayers at Riverside Catholic Cemetery, The Pas, Manitoba, a reception was held for family and friends at the Guy Hall. If friends so desire, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3L 0K6, would be appreciated by Jack’s family.
