John Johnson Obituary

Jack was born in The Pas, Manitoba, Monday, February 23, 1925. He grew up in Fingerville and attended the old Red Brick School until World War II interrupted his education. He tried to enlist underage but had to go back to Saskatoon when he reached legal age. He served in the Royal Navy and participated in D-Day. He was on the Motorized Torpedo Boats (466) until a huge fire and explosion destroyed part of the 29 Flotilla. He was then reassigned to the HMCS Algonquin until the end of the war. After the war he was employed at the TB Sanitarium at Clearwater Lake and then worked for the CNR. December 6, 1951 Blanche and Jack were married. Jack then (being nobody’s fool) saw the writing on the wall and decided to sober up and go into the insurance business and that’s where he really hit his stride. He was consistently one of the top salesman but for five years straight he was the top salesman in Western Canada for the Crown Life Insurance Company. During the 1960’s and 70’s he expanded his life insurance business to include general and commercial lines of insurance, Autopac, real estate, investments, income tax and a travel agency. During these busy years he found time to serve as head of the School Board in the 1970’s and as Returning Officer for Churchill Riding in the 1980’s. He was also a Mason, a Shriner and a member of the Elks and the Legion and was one of the founding members of Alcoholics Anonymous in The Pas in the early 1950’s. Jack was also a Rotarian and was involved in Operation Eye Sight. Blanche and Jack both enjoyed travelling and saw much of the world together before and after he retired. They spent winters in Florida and then Arizona hanging around golf courses and swimming pools but his family all know he enjoyed his woodpile at Clearwater Lake just as much. With an axe in his hands and a pipe in his mouth he was a happy guy. As he got older his journeys got shorter right up to the end when he could be spotted tooling around town in his little red scooter. Dad was a happy, good hearted , straight forward guy who served his country and community and did the best he could for his friends and family. He was one of the good guys. No one knows this better than his family and especially his two granddaughters in whom he took so much pride and joy and who were in his last dying thoughts and words. Dad believed strongly in the AA Serenity Prayer and it served him well over the years. His was a life well lived and he lives on in his family’s memories and hearts forever. Jack passed away Thursday, September 22, 2011 at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba, age 86 years. We love you and we miss you. Rest in peace old sailor.
