Joseph Young Obituary

Joseph Lawrence Young was born Wednesday, June 28, 1950 to Senator John Young and Elizabeth Jane Young (nee) Bignell at The Pas, Manitoba. Dad was a very humble man, caring and unselfish. He respected all living things, but most of all, to respect other people young and old. Dad fell in love with Mom (while she was babysitting him) and were united in marriage on December 14, 1974 and together they had four (4) children: Neil, Steph, Kimberly and Tara. He had nicknamed all his children; Neil was “Mr. Wee Wheel”, Steph was “Mopsy Wopsy”, Kim was “Kimbellines” and Tara was “Tara Bubbles”. Dad passed away peacefully with his family and friends by his side Monday, November 22, 2010 at St. Anthony’s Hospital at the age of 60 years. Joseph resided on Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Manitoba most of his life where he grew up and worked as a contractor, building houses. Joseph worked on dams and bridges across Western Canada and Northern Manitoba, he was very proud of his trade before his life was halted when he was diagnosed with heart disease at a very young age of 38. Joseph had gone through a number of surgeries in his life long battle with his illness. He kept doctors busy and puzzled them because he was always coming up with some kind of illness that was new to them causing them to invent new medications for other patients like him. Why we say he was very unselfish, is because he consented to be used as a study with the University of Saskatchewan and also Alberta to assist the new Doctors in training of how they could help other people that were sick. He was very proud of this decision and when mom asked him why he did this, he said, “to help other people like me.” Our life with Dad wasn’t always about his illness, he didn’t dwell on this. He even managed to get day passes from the hospital to go and supervise his Housing Crew and they would get upset with him and would tell him to go and rest. His response to the Housing Crew was, “no I feel better today and I want to make sure the job is well done.” He had 11 grandchildren, whom he loved very much, he was very proud when his first grandchild Jacob was born. He always thought he would never have any grandchildren. He loved them all. One of his favorite pastimes was cooking and barbequing for them. They would all sit around waiting for Papa to finish cooking and he would sit there watching them enjoy his cooking. He shared laughs with everyone he knew and his comments will be missed. He enjoyed hanging out at the Otineka Mall with his Round Table buddies. He made sure he completed his 8 hour shifts at the Otineka Mall. The one thing about Karate is he was always right no matter if he knew was wrong. He had to have the last word and he would sit there and smile even though he knew he was wrong. When he finished raising his children he continued on his father duties to his grandchildren. He did not stop being a father and role model to many. Dad leaves to cherish his memory, his loving wife of 36 years, Muriel Young; son Neil (Francine) Young and his three daughters, Stephanie (Andrew), Kimberly, and Tara Young (Kelvin) and he also considered nephew Bradley Young (Andie) as his son. Joseph is also survived by his brothers, Ken (Betty) Young, Bernard (Florence) Young, Marcel (Vivian) Young; sisters, Betsy Kematch, Esther Young, Doris Young, Maria (Henry) Cook, Edith Young (Ron), Rosalyn (George) Ing, and Lillian (Gordon) Landriault.
