Julia Wasyliw (nee Harmatiuk) a loved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, great, great, grandmother, mother-in-law, aunt, passed away peacefully, Sunday, March 28, 2010 at St. Paul’s Personal Care Home, The Pas, Manitoba, age 94 years. Julia was born Wednesday, April 21, 1915 at Sokal, Saskatchewan. Julia married Bill Wasyliw at Domremy, Saskatchewan, October 9, 1938. They farmed in the Tway, Saskatchewan area from 1938 to 1948. During this time twin girls, Laverne and Leona were born followed by two sons, Russel and Robert. The family moved to Weekes, Saskatchewan in 1948 and subsequently to Carragana, Saskatchewan where they continued to farm. Times were tough but they persevered with limited success. In September 1954, the family moved to The Pas, Manitoba where Bill went to work for Scott National and Julia went to work at the Avenue Hotel. In 1957 the family moved to Prince Albert, Saskatchewan for a short time but decided to return to the family farm at Carragana. It was there that Bill got sick and subsequently passed away in April 1960 at the age of 44 years. Julia continued to live in Carragana and worked very hard to raise the two boys. The girls had married and started their own families. In 1965, Julia moved to Campbell River, B.C. to be near her daughter Laverne Mawhinny and sons Russel and Robert, however, she returned to The Pas, Manitoba in 1969 where she went to work at St. Paul’s Residence and the Wescana Inn. Julia retired in 1987 at which time she sold her house and moved into the Northern View Lodge where she resided and enjoyed her retirement years until she became ill in January 2010 and eventually, moved into St. Paul’s Personal Care Home where she passed away. Julia cherished her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and eventually great, great grandchildren. She also enjoyed a very close relationship with her sister, Katie Wojcichowsky and was devastated when Katie passed away in June 2005—life was not the same and never would be again! Julia was predeceased by her husband Bill; her parents, Harry and Christina Harmatiuk; sisters Annie Melnyk, Mary Pederson, Katie Wojcichowsky; brothers Mike, Bill, Dan and John Harmatuik; son-in-law Robert Mawhinny; numerous nieces, nephews and many in-laws. Julia will be greatly missed by daughters Laverne Mawhinny, Campbell River, B.C., Leona (Lance) Axcell, The Pas, Manitoba; sons Russel (Beverly) Wasyliw and Robert Wasyliw, Campbell River, B.C.. Julia “Granny” is also survived by grandchildren Julianne (Max) Kimble, Leona (Garry) Walowski, Kim (Lambert) Gott, Michael (Geraldine) Mawhinny, Pamela (Wayne) Pajack, Patricia (Norman) Roussin, Shelley (Hank Randrup) Hrabarchuk, Bill Hrabarchuk, Robert Hrabarchuk, Cindy (Glenn) Schiller, Teresa (Michael) Loukianoff, Lisa (Clayton) Warner, Bill (Betty) Wasyliw, Sherri Axcell, Michelle (Bill) Corrigal. Julia “Baba” is also survived by great grandchildren Levi and Annie Kimble, Bobbi Shae Walowski, Katie (Aaron) Porter, Morgun and Michael Olson, Dalton and Alexandra Pajack, Rachalle and Baily Roussin, Warren Hrabarchuk, Jacob, Madeline and Samantha Loukianoff, Jordann and Brody Warner, Chalene Axcell; great, great, grandhchildren Emma Bedard, Sarah Porter, Sadie Lazar and Linden Pajack. The funeral service for Julia was held Thursday, April 1, 2010, 1:00 pm at the Chapel of Hemauer Funeral Home, The Pas, Manitoba with James Hemauer presiding. Memories of the heart was shared by Julia’s son Russel Wasyliw. Interment followed at Lakeside Cemetery, The Pas, Manitoba. Pallbearers were Lance Axcell, Bill Hrabarchuk, Bob Hrabarchuk, Peter Campbell, Garry Walowski, Aaron Porter.
