Laurie Macumber Obituary

Laurie (Red) Macumber passed away suddenly with friends by his side, Friday, August 14th, 2015 at the St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba, at the age of 83 years. Red was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia Tuesday, July 5, 1932; He was the oldest of 9 boys. Red received his education up to grade 6 and after that went to work to help support his family. At the age of 18 Red and his brother enlisted into the Canadian Armed Forces and were based in Victoria. This is where he found his true love Mary (Cherwenuk) and after a short courtship, Mary and Red were married March 7, 1953 in Victoria BC. After numerous posts, Red left the Army in 1954 to eventually settle in The Pas Manitoba. Red worked as a bouncer at the local pub the Alouette; he met many people over the years and had some good stories to tell. Red also worked as a Conservation Officer, held jobs with Scott National, Western Groceries, Porky Packers, CFI, security at The Pas Yard and worked as a Correctional Guard. During his time as a guard he was asked to take over the Pas Correction Kitchen. They loved his cooking so much that they offered him the kitchen at Egg Lake where he found his true calling. He loved to teach the inmates how to cook and was proud of those that found employment after being released from incarceration. He worked at Egg Lake until retirement in 1992. Red was an avid hunter, fisherman (with or without dynamite), a gardener and he loved to share his knowledge with his children and grandchildren. If you happened to be blessed with his many gifts of garden plants and instructions on how to care for them over a good cold drink and some good old jokes you never went away empty handed. Red also had a passion for hockey. He really enjoyed coaching the kids and he would make sure all kids would have equipment. Red was the first coach to incorporate mixed teams. In Red’s final years, his home was St. Paul’s and he loved his outing to Giant Tiger and Burger King. He could be seen with those bright yellow bags behind his electric wheel chair. He also liked to go out to the grave site in the handy van to visit with Mary and to lay flowers and put solar lights on her grave. Red is survived by his sons Wayne of Selkirk MB, Raymond (Terry) of Selkirk MB, Glen (Vanessa) of Edmonton AB; daughters Sharon of Selkirk MB, and Colleen (Ross) of Athabasca AB; brothers Billy Macumber of Falmouth NS, Brian Macumber of Falmouth NS, Paul Macumber of Falmouth NS, Dennis Macumber of Bramber NS and Darrell Macumber of Sandford MB; grandchildren Audrey, Bobby, David, Ryan, Tara, Colton, Jessie, Erica, Dominic, Paige, Kaycee, Steven and Zoe; 8 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Red was proceeded by his wife Mary; infant son Gregory; parents Stanford and Elizabeth Macumber; and brothers Donald, Gary and Robert. In keeping with Red’s wishes, cremation took place and a service of remembrance to celebrate his life was held Thursday, August 20, 2015, 2:00 pm, at Christ Church Anglican, The Pas, Manitoba, with Rev. Rebecca Graham and Rev. Deacon Mike Dickens presiding. Music ministry was provided by Rochelle Rydberg. Memories of the heart were shared by Connie Lucian and Al MacLauchlan. Following interment prayers at Lakeside Cemetery, The Pas, Manitoba and a reception was held for family and friends at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Christ Church Anglican Memorial Fund, Box 125, The Pas, Manitoba, R9A 1K3 or The Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary for sponsorship of Kid’s Camp, c/o Box 478, The Pas, Manitoba, R9A 1K6.
