Liel Martinuson

Long time resident of The Pas, Liel Jasper Martinuson, husband of Mavis Irene, passed away peacefully surrounded by family, Wednesday, September 6, 2017, at St. Anthony's Hospital, The Pas, MB, at the age of 83 years. Liel was born Friday, September 15, 1933 in Rose Valley, Saskatchewan to Corey and Ida Martinuson. Liel was the oldest of 6 children. Liel and Mavis were married June 29, 1957 in Flin Flon, MB and were gifted with 2 children. Liel was employed by Sherritt Gordon Mines and then by HBM&S in Flin Flon and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with his many friends and family and has several Master Angler awards to his credit. Liel and Mavis moved to The Pas, MB in 1975 and shortly after they opened L & M Sporting Goods ("L" for Liel and "M" for Mavis). Over the years Liel was a member of the Flin Flon Volunteer Fire Department; Game and Fish Association; Fire Arms Association and after moving to The Pas he joined The Pas Masonic Lodge, Eastern Star and the Shrine where he co-ordinated the collection of drink can tabs for many years. He was also a member of The Pas Legion and The Sons of Norway. In his spare time he always grew a beautiful garden with many types of vegetables and fruit trees. He looked forward to the annual Corn Roast that he and Mavis hosted at their farm in the Carrot Valley for their family and friends. During his lifetime he was an entrepreneur and enjoyed Wild Rice growing and harvesting, fur buying, guiding, and was always trying to plant something new and unique, such as fruit trees, grapes, haksap berries, etc. He always had ideas on how to help Mavis change recipes, sometimes to her dismay. He loved reading about the north and discovering his roots. He loved to travel and made a trip with Mavis to Norway and Sweden in 2000 where he met many Scandinavian relatives. Liel was pre-deceased by his father Corey; mother Ida; an infant brother Gene; his brother Ken; and granddaughter Chrystal Hilton; sister-in-law Dorothy Fox. Left to cherish his memories are his loving wife of 60 years Mavis; his daughter Debbie (Duane) Hilton; son Monty (Diane); grandchildren Wayne (Deanna) Chaplin, Lisa (Darek) Czyzowicz and great granddaughter Leigha, Tristan Martinuson, Stephanie Samuel and Alex Samuel; brothers Don (Ruth), Norm (Judy); sister Karen Lambert; brothers-in-law Howard Fox, Norman (Judy) Fox; sisters-in-law Josie (Gord) Miller, Eileen Martinson; plus many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. In keeping with family wishes cremation took place and a service of remembrance to celebrate Liel’s life was held Saturday, September 9, 2017, 10:00 am, at the Westminster United Church, The Pas, Manitoba, with Linda Buchanan presiding. Music Ministry was provided by Val Beckingham. Readings were read by Warren Wain, Jim Metcalfe and Cherlyn Cain. Immediately following the service, a reception was held for family and friends at the Westminster United Church basement. A private family interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the CancerCare Chemo Room, c/o Box 240, The Pas, Manitoba, R9A 1K4, would be appreciated by Liel’s family.
