Lorraine Fortin Obituary

After her 2nd courageous battle with cancer, Lorraine passed away peacefully at home Saturday September 21, after visiting with loved ones. Lorraine was deeply loved, and will be greatly missed, by her grandchildren, children, family and friends. For Lorraine, her grandchildren always got top billing. Lorraine was born Saturday, December 29, 1951, in Sherridon, the first of 7 children. Her Grampa always held a special place in his heart for his 1st grandchild. After a few years in Sherridon, Lorraine moved with her family to The Pas, where she remained. As the oldest, Lorraine always looked after and protected her younger siblings. Lorraine was a good student. In fact, when she was too young to go to school she would often go to school and have to be brought back home by her mom. Although she only went to grade 11, she furthered her education at KCC and went to Manfor for work experience. Although she came from simple beginnings, Lorraine worked hard at her Manfor/Repap/Tolko career and was well respected and successful because of it. Lorraine always said “You know you’re getting ahead when someone’s trying to kick you in the ass”. Lorraine had Bob in 1972, and Dennis in 1975. Lorraine and her boys were very close, and kept in constant contact through all the years. She passed along her work ethic to her children, and there wasn’t many weekend or holiday sleep-ins. Mornings were often accompanied by a loud alarm, and a long to-do list. If the loud alarm didn’t wake you, stereo speakers were place by your bedroom door, and the music turned up as she left for work. A phone call could be expected shortly after she got to work, to ensure everyone was up and busy. Lorraine met Barry late in life, but he meant the world to Lorraine, and was a great support and partner throughout their time. Lorraine loved camping, and often took all of her grandchildren camping by herself. You knew when, her grandson Dylan, at the age of three, had been camping with Grandma, when he came home, dropped something accidentally on the floor and said “Shit”! (Gramma’s often used curse word) Used in the correct context of course! More recently a crew consisting of Derrick, Monique, Krista and Dre had to rescue Gramma from the muskeg on a boating expedition! All the grandkids enjoyed their times with Gramma, whether it was vacations, trips downtown, or simply spending time at her house. They all knew they would be taken care of and spoiled, and where the ‘good’ snacks were kept. Lorraine got the travelling bug after a family trip to Walt Disney World, later traveling to Mexico with Barry. She had planned to go a few more places, but unfortunately found out her cancer was back before she could go. Lorraine is survived by her spouse Barry; her children Bob (Cindy) and Dennis (Tracy); grandchildren Carmen, Dylan, Lexie, Derrick, Monique, and Krista; mother Markella; sister Judy (Larry), brother Butch, sister Candice (John), sister Maureen (Barry), sister Cindy; and numerous nieces and nephews. Lorraine was predeceased by her bother Dennis; her grandparents; uncle Louis. In keeping with family wishes, cremation has taken place and A Service of Remembrance to celebrate Lorraine’s life was held Thursday, September 26th at 11:00 a.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion, The Pas with James Hemauer presiding. Honorary Pallbearers: Carmen Fortin, Derrick Fortin, Dylan Fortin, Monique Fortin, Lexie Fortin, Krista Fortin. Following the reception at the Royal Canadian Legion, interment took place at Lakeside Cemetery, The Pas. If friends so desire, donations to The Pas Health Complex Foundation, Inc., Memorial Fund, Chemotherapy Department, Box 541, The Pas, Manitoba, R9A 1K4, would be appreciated by Lorraine’s family. Hemauer Funeral Home and Cremation Services, The Pas, were in care of arrangements.
