Marie Veito Obituary

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Marie Elisabeth Veito (nee Nabess) Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba, at the age of 93 years, after a courageous battle with cancer, with her family at her side. Mary was born in Pukatawagan, Manitoba, Monday, August 30, 1920 to Adelaide and Louis Nabess while her father was working on the rail line. Their permanent home was in Cumberland House, SK, due to her father’s continued travels with CNR this led them to The Pas, Manitoba which they called home. Living through the depression years made mom a very strong, hard working woman. A trait she maintained throughout her life. Mom had held various jobs throughout her life which included the CNR, Kelsey School, and her final place of employment was at Keewatin Community College where she retired in 1986. When she retired she had received the Meritorious Service Award which she was very proud of. Mom always loved meeting people whether it was meeting them on the street or at her home having a cup of tea. She always had a story to tell or pass on news which was important to her. You knew when talking to mom you would always be there for more than just a few minutes. She always had a knack of putting her conversations in a humorous way. Her strongest characteristic would be passing on the history of The Pas and how life was through the depression. She also had a stubbornness that helped her stand up for herself, and she would not budge once her mind was made up. Mom was very proud of her Metis heritage and could speak five languages which consisted of English, French, Michif, Cree, and Ojibway. She would practice these languages until her passing, depending on who she was talking to. She was very strong in her Catholic faith and attended church when possible. It was very important to Mary to pass on her faith and beliefs to her family and friends. Mary will be sadly missed by her sons Robert “Bob” (Mickey) of Selkirk, MB, Arthur (Sandy) of Winnipeg, MB; daughter Annette (Jim) Niven of Minitonas, MB; grandchildren Rhonda (Dean), Robert (Lori), Travis, Tracy (Mike) and Treena (Jordan); great grandchildren Danielle (Bobby), Kendra, Ashley, Jordy, Jordan, Caleb, and Landen; great, great, grandchildren Ashlynn and Robert whom she loved and cherished; and many extended family. She was predeceased by her husband Walter John Veito; parents Adelaide and Louis Nabess; son Walter Veito; brothers Joe (Francis) Nabess, Lionel Nabess; sister Margaret (Clarence) Lokabo; and other close family and friends. In keeping with Mary’s wishes cremation took place and a Service of Remembrance to celebrate her life was held, Saturday, May 3, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, The Pas, Manitoba with Rev. Jack Herklotz presiding. Music ministry was provided by Mike Jebb Jr.. Scripture readings were proclaimed by Treen Rooks, Laurel Palosaari and Tracy Stratychuk. Memories of the heart was shared by daughter Annette Niven. Following the service, a reception was held at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, The Pas, Manitoba. A private family interment took place at Lakeside Cemetery, The Pas, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations to A Port In The Storm Inc., 208 Provencher Blvd., Box 85, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2H 0G0 or to the CancerCare Manitoba, ON1160 – 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3E OV9, would be appreciated by Mary’s family.
