Martha Gislason THE PAS, Manitoba Obituary

Martha Gislason

Martha Johanna (Berg) Gislason was born Friday, March 29, 1935 in Endeavour, SK, the eldest child of Melvin and Mildred Berg and the first born grandchild on both her mother and father’s sides of the family. When Martha was nine years old her family moved to Flin Flon, MB, where she completed her schooling and met and married her husband, John Oliver Gislason on December 22, 1956. In 1967 they moved their family to The Pas. Together, Martha and John raised, four children, Debbie, Shawna, Lorie, and John. Mom started working at the Grub Box in 1974 and was a dedicated employee there until 2012 when her health made it impossible for her to work any longer, this was devastating for her. The Grub Box staff was like a second family to her, especially after dad passed away. She spoke very highly of them and was always bringing home stories from work to share. They could do no wrong in her eyes. Mom enjoyed playing cards, especially with her grandchildren, teaching them to play fish and war, and then when they got older, solitaire and hand and foot. She continued to do so even after her eyesight deteriorated in 1999, it just took her a little longer to arrange her cards. Martha loved watching her reality tv shows. Her and her sister Millie and brother in law, Jim would phone each other faithfully, after each episode to discuss what happened and what would happen next. When Martha’s sister Elva, was still alive, you could often find them “crashing” around town. It was always amusing to hear what kind of adventures they would get themselves into. Mom’s biggest pet peeve was being late for anything! If you ever had to pick her up, and did not get there early enough, you would get “the look” – and you knew she was mad! Mom was a great baker, and always enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, especially her beloved, “Sunday Suppers”. When dad passed away in 1987, mom started to cook supper each Sunday for the whole family as a way for us to get together. If anyone ever skipped a “Sunday Supper” you better have had a good excuse to be missing and you and your whereabouts would be discussed over the meal. Mom was the heart of our family; she wanted us to stay close and look out for each other always. Funny that she took a turn for the worst on a Sunday to have us altogether again. Martha passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, Sunday, March 16, 2014, at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, at the age of 78 years. Martha will be sadly missed by her daughters Debbie (Roland) Mayer, Shawna (Norman) Stevenson, Lorie (Melvin) Hanson, her son John (Megan) Gislason. Her grandchildren Curtis Mayer (Anna Marie), Denise Mayer, Ricky (Chantel) Mayer, Leslie Stevenson (Ashlin), Dewey Stevenson (Jonah), Karley Hanson, Brett Hanson (Shayla), Jake Gislason, Will Gislason and Silvie Gislason. Her great grandchildren Landon Mayer, Raquel Mayer, Alicia Stevenson. Her brothers Marvin (Hazel) Berg, Harold (Shirley) Berg, Martin (Sadie) Berg, and sister Mildred (Jim) James; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Martha is predeceased by her husband John; infant daughter; granddaughter Breanne; parents Mildred and Melvin; sister Elva Reinfort; and brother in law, Albert Reinfort; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Prayers and visitation were held Wednesday, March 19, 2014, 7:00 p.m. at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, The Pas, Manitoba. The Funeral Service was held Thursday, March 20, 2014, 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, with Rev. Jack Herklotz presiding. Music Ministry: Jana Dutkiewicz.
