Mary Moran

Mary was born Saturday, March 23, 1935 in Moose Lake, Manitoba where she spent her early years until moving to The Pas when she was 18 years old. Mary was one of seven children born to Annie and Louis Martin of Moose Lake, Manitoba. Mary worked as a Nurse Care Aide for St. Anthony’s and Peguis Hospital. She worked for the Lamb family as a cook and housekeeper prior to relocating to Grand Rapids where she was employed as a camp cook. Mary would work at these various jobs until she made the decision to return to The Pas to complete her counselling certification in 1975. After obtaining her certificate Mary began her career in the field of Addiction Counselling where she would work for the next 23 years until retirement. Mary always felt that counselling people was her life`s goal and she was proud of her 39 years of sobriety. This March would have marked her 40th year of sobriety. Mary’s passion was Counselling and she made a tremendous impact in the lives of many people—young and old. Mary enjoyed attending all AA round-ups, meetings, going to Bingo, travelling and being independent. She especially enjoyed and loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mary passed away peacefully with her family by her side, Thursday, December 9, 2010 at St. Anthony’s Hospital in The Pas, Manitoba, age 75 years. Mary will always be lovingly remembered by her children, Lloyd Martin, Gladys (Keith) Guay, Janet (Nicolas) Moran, Harry (Cynthia) Moran, Clifford Moran, Annie (Ronnie) Haukaas and Brian (Angie) Moran; sisters Edna Cook and Doris (Rod) Young. She will also be missed by numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many other family members as well as many people she assisted in their recovery. Mary will be especially missed by her long time companion Mike Zahayko of Yorkton, Saskatchewan. Mary was predeceased by her husband Harry Moran; son Stanley Martin; parents Louis and Annie Martin; father-in-law Charles Morin; brothers Roderick, James, John and Ruben; brother-in-law, Bill Cook. Mary faced all challenges throughout her life without fear and was not afraid to take her new journey. Wake services were held Saturday, December 11, 2010 and Sunday, December 12, 2010 at the Church of Messiah, Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Manitoba. The funeral service for Mary was held Monday, December 13, 2010, 11:00 am at the Church of Messiah, Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Manitoba with Rev. Douglas Highway and Rev. Don McNabb presiding. Music ministry was provided by Carol Lathlin. Scripture readings were proclaimed by Annie Haukaas, Clifford Moran, Gladys Guay and Janet Moran. Eulogy was delivered by Mike Munro and Keith Guay Sr. Interment followed at Riverside Catholic Cemetery, The Pas, Manitoba. Pallbearers were Keith Guay Jr., Wesley Martin, Doug McIvor, Brennan Guay, Nicholas Nasikapow, Ralph Nasikapow Jr., Brian Moran, Harry Moran and Clifford Moran. Honorary pallbearers were Lloyd Martin, Keith Guay Sr., Ron Haukaas, Ralph Nasikapow Sr., Nicholas Malabar, Sidney Scribe, Ken Kalk and all Mary’s AA friends. If friends so desire, donations to The Pas Health Complex Foundation, Inc., Memorial Fund, Palliative Care Division, Box 541, The Pas, Manitoba, R9A 1K4, would be appreciated by Mary’s family.
