Olga Nikolychuk Obituary

Olga Nikolychuk (nee Kowal) was born Tuesday June 20, 1922 to John and Anna Kowal on the farm near Willowbrook, Saskatchewan. She was raised on the family farm and received her education from Centre School in the Willowbrook district. After completing her education, Olga aspired to obtain work in the city but started her first job with the Swift Canadian Company candling eggs in Willowbrook. During her employment, she was transferred to Melville, then Abernethy and Balcarres, and then back to Willowbrook. After that, she worked for a short time at Leable’s General Store and later began working in the main kitchen at Fort San, Saskatchewan. After an adventurous trip to Regina, with her brother Hank, Olga landed a job in the city at Pearlman’s Ladies Wear, where she worked for the next three years. In 1944, Olga met John Nikolychuk in The Pas, Manitoba while visiting her brother Hank in St. Anthony’s Hospital. After that, John kept in touch with letters and regular visits; they became good friends and later, sweethearts. This went on for eight years during which time they became engaged. In 1952, Olga married John in Yorkton, Saskatchewan and then moved home to The Pas. Olga and John had a very happy life in The Pas. From their love came two daughters, Sandra and Janet, who they loved unconditionally. They were later blessed with grandchildren, who were their pride and joy and Olga’s “whole life”. Through the years, Olga always found time for family and friends and her patience and love were never ending. When not tending to her family, she found time to enjoy her many hobbies which included gardening, baking, crafts, needlework, picking berries and being an active member with the Westminster United Church Women. After John passed away in 1997, she moved from their home to Parkview Place where she resided for 14 years. On January 18, 2013, Olga moved to St. Paul’s Personal Care Home where she resided until her passing. There Olga met many new friends and enjoyed participating in activities and special occasion gatherings. Olga passed away peacefully Friday, May 17, 2013 at St. Paul’s Personal Care Home, The Pas, at the age of 90 years. Olga was predeceased by her parents, John and Anna; her husband John; her five brothers, John, Mike, Hank, Nick, and Steve; and her sister Mary Strandberg. Olga was also predeceased by many brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws on the Nikolychuk side of the family. Olga leaves to mourn her passing, her two daughters, Sandra (Arnold) Paskaruk of The Pas, Janet (Gene) Luce of Lloydminster, Saskatchewan; three granddaughters, Krystle (Brian) Robinson, Brittany Luce (Adam), Leanne Luce (Tyson); brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws, nieces and nephews; and many special friends. The funeral service for Olga was held, Thursday, May 23, 2013, at 1:00 pm at the Westminster United Church, The Pas, Manitoba with Joan Prokopow presiding.
