Peter Berezowecki Obituary

It is with sad hearts we announce the passing of long-time resident of The Pas Peter Berezowecki, on Monday, February 27, 2017, St. Paul’s Personal Care Home, The Pas, Manitoba, at the age of 89 years. Peter was born in Hafford, Saskatchewan on Wednesday, July 13, 1927, the eldest of five children, to Bohdan and Mary Berezowecki. The family moved to The Pas in the thirties to escape the dust bowl of the prairies when Peter was still a young child. Peter received all his schooling in The Pas and worked for the CN on the famous Hudson Bay Line as a Fireman in the 50's. Peter married Nancy Wolicki on July 13, 1951. They were married 42 years and raised 3 children. He realized farming was his true calling and the best way to provide a life for a family. Like many farmers he held down a job off the farm to support the farming operation. Of particular pride to him, was knowing that the farm continues in the family by the fourth generation. In 1966, when KCC opened, Peter worked there as a stationary engineer until retirement in 1992 though farming remained the focal point of his life. He had a great love for farming and chose to make it his lifelong work, first with dairy farming and then mixed farming (cattle and grain). He was involved in 4-H with his sons and was an active member of the Pasquia Grassland Society, a local cattlemen's group. Peter was a voracious reader and subscribed to and supported countless agricultural publications up to the time of his passing. Peter was always very civic-minded. He was a school trustee on the Kelsey School Division School Board for 20 years. He served as an executive member of the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church. Peter received a lifetime membership to the Golden Agers on Thursday, March 20, 2014. After retirement he became a daily fixture at the coffee shop. Friends regularly called to take him for his daily coffee shop visit when the weather was not suitable for him to use his scooter. The family would like the Fat Boy's Coffee Club to consider themselves honorary pallbearers. Peter married Mary Ilchyshyn on February 11, 2001. They had 16 years together. Peter was predeceased by his parents Bohdan (1972) Mary (2002); his first wife, Nancy (1993); sister Ollie Greening (2008); brothers-in-law Ben Greening (1996) and Paul Kundert (2016). He is survived by his second wife Mary Ilchyshyn; daughter Gail Kress; sons Reg (Denise), Rod (Brenda); grandsons Graham (Mignone), Jeff, Jarret (Dailynn), Dylan, Andrew and great grandson Zane (the little guy); sisters Anne Kundert, Rose Meredith (Harry) and brother Tony Berezowecki. The family would like to thank the staff at St. Paul's Residence, ACIU and Outpatient/Emergency at St. Anthony's Hospital for the outstanding care they provided to Peter. A service of remembrance will be held on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 1:00 pm at Hemauer Funeral Home, The Pas. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Carrot Valley Hall, Box 852, The Pas, MB, R9A 1K8 or the Canadian Diabetes Association, 200-310 Broadway., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 0S6 or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
