Philip Bachnick Obituary

My Story Written by Philip Bachnick Was born March 21, 1920 at Loverna, Saskatchewan, near boundry of Alberta. My father worked for the CN Railway in this area. We then moved to South Battleford and started school in this town. In the spring of 1928 we moved to Pickwitonei, Manitoba. Dad worked on the Hudson Bay Railway. Went to school till about 1937 then started trapping and fishing. In 1939 the war broke. Shortly after we went to Winnipeg and joined the Armed Forces. My five brothers followed me later. I served with the Regina Rifle Regiment and badly wounded on the Normandy Beach on D-Day, June 6, 1944. Returned to Canada and was discharged in 1945. Worked for Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting in 1946 at the Zinc Leaching Plant. Then for Howe Sound Gold Mine at Snow Lake. From 1947 to 1950 I went back to Pickwitonei and trapped for 3 years. My next employment was for Sherrit Gordon Mines and Conwest Exploration, very good companies to work for. After working several years for the last two companies, I decided to go on my own. Go myself another trap line at Bakers Narrows (near Flin Flon) and started prospecting again. This was my favorite type of work and was able to keep in good physical and healthy shape by doing this, cutting lines in the bush and geophysical work always looking for drill targets. We did a lot of flying with bush pilots. Tom Lamb and his boys flew us to many places in Northern Manitoba, Northwest Territories and the Arctic. I also spent a few summers prospecting in the Yukon. From 1958 till my retirement in 1988, I lived and trapped in the Bakers Narrows area and I also did my prospecting and exploration work from this location (a cabin by Neso Lake). Had many good friends visit and stay with me. Enjoyed fishing, hunting, berry picking, canoeing and a lot of times go on a long hike in the bush. Had a very good healthy life in the wilderness. There was always plenty of good fresh fish and wild game in this north country, so we lived very well. Philip passed away peacefully Friday, June 16, 2017, at St. Paul’s Personal Care Home, The Pas, Manitoba, at the age of 97 years.
