Richard McDuff THE PAS, Manitoba Obituary

Richard McDuff

Richard was born Monday, September 7, 1942 in East Horsley, Surrey, England. He travelled to Canada with his mother Marjorie McDuff (nee Catt). They sailed on the ship the “Aquitania” arriving on October 18, 1943. They then travelled to Winnipeg and then to Dauphin to meet Richard’s father, Pat McDuff. They later moved to The Pas where the other children were born; 11 siblings in all! Being the oldest, Richard certainly knew how to wash up the kids, change diapers and hang them on the line, even in 30° below weather. He began other work around the age of 10. His first wages were from pulling his sled down to the C.N. Station, picking up newspapers for his delivery route. Deliveries were done before school and wages started at .10 cents per paper. He used this money to help out his mom. The cold never bothered him much, as he had such a warming and loving heart. Richard never shirked from work, loved people. He lived with other families while growing up and worked on their farms. Because he was a willing worker, he held many jobs including driving a city bus in Brandon. Richard was united in marriage in The Pas to Vicki Leader and then moved to Calgary where he worked at Standard Radiator Shop and later moved back to The Pas when Churchill Forest Industries was being set up. Richard went to school and became a millwright and later on a supervisor with many wonderful men whom he admired whole heartedly. Richard and Vicki had 3 children and fostered several others. He assisted Vicki in her work and travels, allowing her freedom to grow and learn. He was the “tea-granny” who helped her feed the many people who came for therapy. To his children Randy (Bridget), Sean and Sherri, and grandkids Matthew and Maggie, his strength, courage and faith walk with them as a legacy of love. Richard passed away peacefully with family by his side, Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba, at the age of 70 years. Richard will be by the side of his wife, Vicki; and children Randy (Bridget), Sean, Sherri; grandchildren Matthew and Maggie. He also survived by his beloved brothers and sisters Ronald “Butch” (Evie) McDuff of Minitonas, MB, Carol (Duncan) Aamot of Cranberry Portage, MB, Roy (Judy) McDuff of Swan River, MB, Cathy (Jack) Halstead of Carman, MB, Connie Robinson of LaBroquerie, MB, Chris (Barry) Stephen of Bowsman, MB, Randy (Michelle) McDuff of Vernon, BC, Reg (Cindy) McDuff of Flin Flon, MB, Ross (Sandy) McDuff of Winnipeg, MB; beloved sisters-in-law Sharon McDuff of Norquay, SK, Violet McDuff of Swan River, MB; all of his very special nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews; goddaughter Jackie Smith; and all his special friends.
