Rick was born Saturday, January 7, 1956 in the Nipawin General Hospital in Nipawin, Saskatchewan. Rick's mom, dad, 2 sisters, and Rick lived on a farm in the Sandwell/Ridgedale district in Saskatchewan until 1968 when they moved to Creighton, Saskatchewan where they resided for approximately 2 years. From there they moved to Flin Flon, Manitoba and resided there for the next 2 years. In 1971 Rick left home and went to work up North in a camp for Midwest Diamond Drilling where he was a bull cook. In 1973, he left camp and moved to The Pas where his family then resided. It was at this time that he also met his future wife, Angela. In 1974 Rick and Angela were married at the Knox United Church in Brandon, Manitoba. In 1982 their first bouncing baby boy was born. Rick was over the moon at having a son. He was named Jeffrey William John after the two grandfathers. In 1989 their second bouncing baby was born. Rick was once more proud as proud could be. The child was named Travis Richard James after his father and a favorite uncle. Rick worked for various employers over the years starting with Mid West Diamond Drilling, Churchill Forest Industries, Graham Construction, Nestor Wulowka, Ewe Peemoeller then finally Town of The Pas where he worked for 30+ years and was still working until his untimely demise. Rick was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also loved camping. Many of our summers were spent camping and fishing at various camp spots but his favorite was Gyles Provincial Park. He was an excellent mentor and teacher and taught his sons all he knew about his favorite hobbies. He was especially proud of his new 70HP Yamaha boat motor and there's a little story behind that. One weekend a trip was planned by his wife and sister-in-law, Jackie Brown to go visit family in Brandon. Rick opted to stay home that weekend claiming that if he went he would spend way too much money at Canadian Tire and Princess Auto (his two favorite stores). So Angela and Jackie went to Brandon to visit family without him. Upon his wife's return Rick was so excited and couldn't wait to show off his brand new boat motor. All I could say was “Oh Sure! You would have spent way too much money if you came to Brandon.” Rick was a loving husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, nephew, and cousin. He was so proud of his sons and all of their accomplishments. He was in his absolute glory when both boys where at home at the same time and spending time with him. He also cherished all of his grandchildren and really not one of them could do wrong in his eyes. One of his favorite times was spending time with family and friends exchanging stories and reminiscing. You could more often than not find him and Larry Krys together either talking of old stories or making new ones. He also loved to joke around and pull little pranks on people if he could get away with it. Rick passed away, Saturday, September 2, 2017, at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba, at the age of 61 years. Rick is pre-deceased by his father, William H. Palmer; fathers-in-law Alfred McGillivary and Jack Payne; mother-in-law Miriam McGillivary (nee Dorion); sisters-in-law Jackie Brown and Roberta McGillivary; nephews Terrance Head and TJ Needham; uncles James Palmer, Leo Vhal and John Armstrong, Jack Beaulieu and Ron Shields. Rick leaves to mourn his wife of 43 years Angela; sons Jeffrey (Teniel Angus), Travis (Lorissa Yaskiw); grandchildren Keenan McLean, William Palmer, Erin Moore, Hailey Moore and Rowen Palmer; his mother and step father Marie Palmer Barrows and Ed Barrows; step mother Anne Palmer; sisters Carolyn (Harvey) Baldwin, Sandra (Wendyl Koostra) Palmer, Wendy Palmer Stewart; brother Randy Palmer; sisters-in-law Hatti (Colin) Foster, Dode (Bob) Hutchings; brothers-in-law Joseph Payne, Nathan (Ida) McGillivary, Francis McGillivary, Stan (Rosalyn) McGillivary; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. In keeping with family wishes, cremation took place and a service of remembrance to celebrate Rick’s life was held Friday, September 8, 2017, 1:00 pm, at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, The Pas, Manitoba, with James Hemauer presiding. Memories of the heart were shared by Jeff and Travis Palmer and Larry Krys. Immediately following the service a reception was held for family and friends at the Royal Canadian Legion Club Room, The Pas. A private family interment will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3C 2B7, would be appreciated by Rick’s family.
