Robert Helstrom Obituary

With his family by his side Bob lost his battle with cancer Tuesday, August 30th, 2011 at St. Anthony's General Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba at the age of 63 years. Bob will be lovingly remembered by his wife Jean of 41 years; children Rob (Penny), Shona (Todd); grandchildren Liam and Grace; mother Hazel; mother-in-law Ila; father-in-law Pete; brothers Bill, Wayne (Cindy), Byron (Sherry), Garth (Heidi); sisters Ruth, Linda (Brian), Gail (Kelly), Bev, Arlene (Mike); sisters-in- law Sarah, Sybella (Chris); brother-in-law Pete; and many nieces, nephews and cousins too numerous to mention. Bob was predeceased by his father Alvin; father-in-law Steve; brothers-in-law Dennis and Albert. Bob was born Friday, July 9th 1948 in Carrot River Saskatchewan to Alvin and Hazel Helstrom. Bob came from a close family of 4 brothers and 5 sisters. He attended school in Carrot River, SK and in 1962 his family moved to The Pas where he continued his education at The Pas Collegiate Institute. Soon after he started his electrical apprenticeship and went on to receive his Journeymen Electrical Licence from Red River Community College. In 1967 he met Jean Mitchell and a few years later they married on August 1st, 1970. Bob and Jean welcomed their son Robert David in The Pas. A few years later they were graced with the birth of their daughter Shona Lee. In the early years of his career he worked on a number of jobsites throughout northern Manitoba. Over the years Bob and Jean have lived in Waboden, Jenpeg, and Sundance working on the Hydro Projects and Power Stations, then settling in The Pas in 1979 where he was employed, until he retired, from Tolko MB in 2007. Bob and his family could be found either out at the farm for Sunday suppers or hanging out on Steve and Ila's patio. After the grandchildren were born his weekends would be spent hosting sleepovers and traveling on hockey trips. His strong involvement with The Pas and Area Horse Association and his volunteering with the local 4-H Horse Club allowed Bob to make many friends throughout the horse community. He could always be counted on when a helping hand was needed. Bob enjoyed building homes and working on projects with his brothers and son. He was known to be the hardest worker on the jobsite. In his retirement years Bob could be found in the Tim Hortons line up, at the rink or in his Lazy Boy waiting for Jean to come home and cook supper. In keeping with family wishes, cremation took place and a service of remembrance to celebrate Bob’s life was held Saturday, September 3, 2011, 2:00 pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, The Pas, Manitoba with James Hemauer presiding. Memories of the heart was shared by Wayne Helstrom, a tribute was given by Rob Helstrom and a scripture reading was proclaimed by Linda Irving. Immediately following the service a reception was held for family and friends at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall. If friends so desire, donations to The Pas Minor Hockey Association, Box 794 The Pas MB R9A 1K8 or a charity of choice would be appreciated by Bob's family. We wish to express our sincere gratitude for the kindness and loving care shown to Bob and his family from the staff at St. Anthony's General Hospital and HSC Staff during his family's journey.
