Rosemarie Wadelius Obituary

“Rose” was born on Friday, July 9, 1943 to Patricia and Joseph Schiefele in Flin Flon, Manitoba. She was the middle child between older sister Shirley and younger brother Robert. She attended elementary public school in Flin Flon, transferring to the local Sir Maurice Roach Catholic High School in Grade 9 and graduated from Grade 12 in 1961. She was especially close to her family and enjoyed spending summers at their Beaver Lake cottage, continuing to do so when her husband was attending summer school. Since Grade 2 Rosemarie wanted to be a teacher and in 1961-62 she attended the Manitoba Teachers’ College in Winnipeg to receive her teacher certification. While there she met her future husband Vaughn Wadelius. She taught Grade 3 at Winnipeg’s Our Lady of Victory School in 1962-64 before agreeing to move to The Pas for “one year” where her fiancé Vaughn had accepted a teaching position with the Kelsey School Division. In The Pas she taught Grade 3 at Sacred Heart School in 1964-65, was married on July 10, 1965 in Flin Flon, and then accepted a Grade 3 position at KSD’s Opasquia Elementary School. In 1966 she left full time teaching in order to raise sons Sean and Kelly, returning to work half time in 1976 when the boys were older, teaching at Mary Duncan Elementary School (1976-87), Opasquia Elementary School (1987-91) and Scott Bateman Middle School (1991-99). In 1981 Rosemarie embarked on acquiring a Bachelor’s degree through correspondence and Inter-University North night classes, graduating from Brandon University in 1989, narrowly missing achieving the university gold medal by a fraction of a percent. She was an inspiration to her two sons and was also very proud of their post-secondary achievements. For several years of her KSD teaching experience Rosemarie taught special education classes and excelled in teaching these students. She had a great love of children and this was always evident in the care and attention she showed her students. Her sons often noted that she baked goodies for her students while limiting her sons’ access to these treats. In 1987 at Opasquia School, Rosemarie began teaching Grade 6 and in 1991 moved to Grade 6 at Scott Bateman Middle School. She thoroughly enjoyed the students at this level. She spent long hours marking and preparing her lessons so that her teaching was relevant and engaging for them. She was especially pleased to accept the challenge of boys in her classes who needed additional help and encouragement, and was overjoyed when they began to do well in their studies. She was noted for handing out hugs to her students when they left her class at the end of the day. Many years later after her retirement she would be approached by former students for a hug. She always knew their names and could recall stories about her interaction with them. For many years Rosemarie was a very active member of The Pas Lionelles, the Catholic Women’s League and enjoyed curling in a women’s league, but gave these up to pursue her degree. She loved her years of participation in The Pas Community Choir, and the occasional trip to a casino where her luck was notable. She was a caring daughter-in-law to Vaughn’s mother Olive and father Erik, and a great comfort to them as they aged. Rose’s outgoing nature and love of humanity often resulted in her striking up friendly conversations with strangers while waiting in a store line-up or on an elevator. Her family would jokingly ask if she got the addresses of these chance encounters for her Christmas card list. Rosemarie retired in 1999 to play a grandmother (“Granny”) role to Fallon, Griffin and Xander. First born Fallon had a special place in her heart and represented the daughter she never had. They shared a very close relationship over the years. Her two grandsons were treated like her own sons had been, with much love and attention. She traveled with her husband to Australia, New Zealand and several Caribbean and European countries, and especially enjoyed connecting with her father’s German and Swiss siblings and her cousins there. The American friends she made on cruises kept in contact with her for years. After retirement Rosemarie looked forward to spending summer months at their Clearwater Lake family cottage, soaking up the sun and entertaining friends and family. She loved her flower gardens, each year planning for the many flowers she needed for her home and cottage flower pots. She was a great cook and her sons would ask for the recipes of the food she had made for them when they were living at home. In retirement she engaged in regular lunches with many friends, especially a group she called her “sisters”. They, her family and her faith were a solace to her in the years since 2013 when she struggled against cancer. In that struggle she was a fighter and met each new challenge with determination and true grit. In hospital on January 25th, she was able to say goodbye to each of her family. To each of her grandchildren, she gave some final advice and, in return, they sang to her the song she taught them. Rosemarie’s fight with cancer ended on Friday, January 27, 2017 with husband Vaughn and son Kelly at her side. Rose was predeceased by her mother Patricia, her father Joseph, and her sister Shirley. She is survived by her husband Vaughn, sons Sean (Erika) and Kelly (Lauren) and brother Robert Schiefele (Beverly) and her loving grandchildren: Fallon, Griffin, and Xander Wadelius. A funeral mass at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Cathedral, The Pas was held on Monday, February 6, 2017 with Fr. Vijay Deivanayagam presiding, assisted by Fr. Robert Laroche. Music Ministry was provided by Jana Dutkewicz, Tanis Asselstine and The Pas Community Choir. Readers were Lance Wadelius, Leif-Erik Wadelius and Diane Kelly. Memories of the Heart were shared by sons Sean and Kelly, grandchildren Fallon, Griffin and Xander, and her brother Robert. Honorary pallbearers were all of Rose’s former students. The Honour Guard was her “sisters” and grandchildren. Interment is at Lakeside Cemetery, The Pas, MB. Immediately following the service, a time of fellowship for family and friends was held at the Guy Hall. If friends so desire, memorial tributes in Rose’s memory may be made to a charity of choice.
