Shelly Spence

Celebrating the life of our partner, mother, grandmother, sister, niece, auntie, cousin, godmother and friend, Shelly Rose Spence. Shelly Rose was born Thursday, August 17, 1961 in The Pas, Manitoba to Nancy (nee: Flett) and Lucien Spence. Shelly was raised on Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Manitoba where she helped raise her siblings. As a young child Shelly attended Kelsey and as an adolescent she attended the Dauphin McKay Residential School. After leaving Dauphin Shelly moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba at a young age where she met Eugene, and together they had her oldest child, Kendra. After this relationship was over Shelly moved back home where she met Peter, and together they had three children; Candace, Georgina and her baby Chris. Shelly had very good relationships with all her children. As a young lady, Shelly enjoyed being a part of her friends group the Opaskwayak Angels. Shelley was adventurous in her teenage years; Edith remembers her always calling home from various places as they would always have to find rides for her to come home. As a child she was a quiet girl and was always willing to help others. One of Shelly’s best memory as a young child was spending time with her grandfather. Shelly was a very hard worker her whole life right until the end. She loved fishing especially going down river with her cousins and often talked about how many fish she caught and would always say she got the most. There was times when she showed up with no fish, Reza would ask “well where are your fish?” and she would tell Reza that “Dennis took them all.” Shelly moved back to Winnipeg to live permanently but came back and forth often. Candace always wondered how she got back and forth so she asked her one time “Mom, how did you get back and forth all the time? She stated, “I got my ways.” Meaning she knew people. “Traveling woman” we called her. During her time in Winnipeg she met Reza Bazzi, her partner in life. They enjoyed their 18 years together, both good and hard times. Shelly stayed bed side with Reza during his accident and together they healed. When any friends or family came into Winnipeg she would be so happy to see them. She and Reza would welcome them into their homes and loved taking them to various places within the city. Shelly enjoyed the outdoors, camping and fishing. Shelly loved each and every one of her grandchildren and took pride in how beautiful they all are. She enjoyed doing everything for her grandchildren, cooking, cleaning and teaching. Shelly passed away with Reza and her family by her side Thursday, December 22, 2011 at the St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba, at the age of 50 years.
