Sophia McGillivary Obituary

Sophia McGillivary of Big Eddy, Manitoba passed away peacefully with her family by her side, Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at the Rod McGillivary Memorial Care Home, Opaskwayak Cree Nation, Manitoba, at the age of 84 years. Sophia was born Monday, April 14, 1930 in The Pas, Manitoba. She was united in marriage to Phillip McGillivary, September 25, 1945 and they had no children together. Sophia was widowed and later went on to meet Harry Chartrand. She relocated to Wabowden, Manitoba in 1966. She was not able to bear children so she shared her love by opening her home and looking after children. Some of these children stayed temporarily and five were adopted by Harry and Sophie. Sophia was employed for some time at the Silver Leaf Hotel as a housekeeper while Harry commercial fished and trapped. Sophia enjoyed baking for the children, travelling, playing Skip-Bo, Cribbage, Bingo and going camping. In 1984, Sophia’s common-law husband Harry Chartrand passed away. She was then obligated as a mother, provider and caregiver to be strong and raise five children on her own. Sophia was determined to instill life skills and morals into the hearts and minds of her children. She lived a long life and will be missed by many. Sophia leaves to mourn her children Geri (Martin), Sheila (Marcus), Randy (Eva), Mike (Yvonne), Sheldon (Theresa); grandchildren Mike (Brenda), Abbie (Louis), Justin (Lisa), Ann (Brad), Shirley, Shane, Robbie, Jamie, Randy (Amanda), Mindy, Kristy, Rochelle, Jade (Mike), Jan, Joshua, Sarah, Cara, Riel, Michael Jr., Raymond, Tyson, Arron, Joseph, Shane; great grandchildren Bryce, Jeremiah, Ellie, Matti, Andrew, Ariel, Sirrena, Sophia, Tyhrys, Denham, CreeAnn, Landon, Maria, Camden, Faith, Mylan, Ahlora, Kari, Kianna, Betthany. All this wouldn’t have been possible if not for the generosity of OCN. Thank you. If we forgot anyone it was not intentional.
