Terence Allen THE PAS, Manitoba Obituary

Terence Allen

Terry Allen, beloved father, brother, husband and grandfather, passed away peacefully at home after a long and courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, October 4, 2009. Terry was born Friday, January 11, 1952, in Carrot River, Saskatchewan, to Inez and Glen Allen, the third of four children. At the age of 11, Terry moved to The Pas, where through his jobs as a taxi driver and delivery truck driver, met many people, most of whom Terry left a positive impact on. In August 1974, Terry met Linda Veitch, whom he would later marry, despite what he would have called a less than happy first impression. Terry would change his mind soon after however, and the happy couple spent over 34 years in marital bliss before Terry’s passing. In 1977, his first son Trent was born, and then Terry and Linda were blessed once again in 1980 with their second son, Trevor. Terry would always list children as his best “toys,” delighting in getting them fired up and setting them loose, and he never wasted an opportunity to send friends home with several hyper and loud children in tow. Over the years, Terry’s long list of family and friends continued to grow, as nephews, nieces, sister-in-laws and brothers-in-law were added, as were countless friends whom Terry continued to meet, whether as a truck driver for local companies such as SRP, CN Route and Motorways, or, after retiring in 1991, through his farming operations. In 2000, Terry became a grandfather for the first time when Jeremy was born, something which brought about a new level of joy for Terry. Over the next several years, grandchildren Brendan, Hannah, Eric, & Grace joined the family; great-nieces and special friend Eddy Luce, brought him a great deal of joy along the way, in addition to a number of pranks and long stories. Those stories will likely stand as Terry’s greatest legacy, with legends of bravado that included being a bull fighter in Mexico, fighting off Linda for his last tooth after she had “pulled out” all the others, and turning Frosty the Snowman into a tale about a house of ill repute. In 2004, Terry began his long battle with cancer. After first being diagnosed with colorectal cancer, Terry faced surgery. Despite a long stay in Winnipeg at the hospital and the home of his sister-in-law Georgina Glushka and her husband Ray, he was able to persevere. Over the next few years, Terry dealt with numerous doctors’ appointments and tests, but continued to recover. However in the fall of 2007, the cancer returned and after several surgeries and some chemotherapy, Terry elected to live out his remaining days away from doctors and lived his life to the fullest. Despite such a short time period, Terry completed a number of items on his “bucket list” including taking a trip to Arizona, doing some fly fishing with his son Trevor, catching his first bass with his friend Al, and completing the restoration of a 1940’s Minneapolis Moline tractor. Over the last few months of his life, Terry was often too ill to leave home, and after a short stay in the hospital, elected to pass away at home. Linda and his brother Brian, along with many well wishers, loved ones and family, did all they could to make his stay at home as comfortable as they could for him. Terry passed the time without much pain thanks to their diligent efforts. Terry passed away after five years of battling cancer in the early morning hours of October 4th, with his loving wife Linda and brother Brian by his side. Terry was predeceased by his father Glen Allen, mother Inez Allen, father-in-law Rowatt Veitch, nephews Glen Allen and Bradley Cartier, special friend Gerardus deBeer and lifelong friend Clifford Hansen. Terry is survived by his wife Linda, sons Trent and Trevor, (Marcie), brothers Brian, Ron (Sandy), sister Bonnie Cartier (Murray), grandchildren Hannah, Grace, Jeremy, Brendan, Eric, sister-in-laws Gwen (Forde Steel), Georgina (Ray Glushka), brother-in-law Blaine Veitch (Brenda), “favourite” mother-in-law Olive Veitch, Aunt Toisa Hand (Ray), Uncles Ivan and Ken Drimmie, nieces & nephews Josi Allen, Heather Hennessy (Richard), Misty Thibodeaux (Marc), Michael Cartier, Ryan Cartier, Graem Steele (Sarah), Cara McLean (Jeremy), Patti Allen, Lindsey Glushka (Nick), Lesley Glushka, Mark Dickson, Rylan Veitch, Chelsey Veitch and Kari Veitch, great-nieces and nephews Mikah & Jace McLean, Cullen, Ian & Noah Varhol, Kaylan & Isabella Cartier, Dallas Emmell-Hennessy, Damir Allen, and Zoe Hennessy, “adopted daughter” Sharain Jones, and special friend Eddy Luce, along with many other close and dear friends , all of whom Terry would have considered family as well. Pallbearers for Terry are sons Trent and Trevor. Everyone who felt touched in a positive way by Terry is considered as honorary pallbearers, a number too high to count and too long to list. Thanks go to Hemauer Funeral Home for taking care of arrangements for Terry’s funeral, as well as to everyone who attended to celebrate the life of a wonderful man who not only touched, but deeply impacted many along life’s path.
