Teuvo Hellsten Obituary

Teuvo “Terry” was born Monday, January 1, 1945 in Jaala, Finland to Lauri and Aune Hellsten. Teuvo and his family came to Canada in 1971 to begin a career in papermaking. After 24 years, Teuvo retired to enjoy the things he loved. He was always physically active. After winning numerous awards in track and field in Finland, he pursued the sport of cross-country skiing to win many awards again in Canada. Teuvo continued his passion for the sport on the trails outside his front door. Many residents of Clearwater Lake remember him out skiing and walking on the trails around the lake. Teuvo loved the natural surroundings of the Clearwater Lake area. He was an avid fisherman and loved the fishing camp at Mitchell Lake and in the fall, moose hunting at the camp with his Finnish pals. He pursued another Finnish tradition that of the sauna. From the time he arrived and with friends built the sauna at Rocky Lake; he enjoyed its benefits. His pride and joy was the completion of the pine log sauna in the front yard of the house on Clearwater Lake. Though he rarely sat still, when he did, he was an avid sports fan. Teuvo loved watching track and field, football, soccer, skiing and hockey, especially when Finland won! Recently he spent over a month in Finland where he visited his home and reconnected with relatives and friends. Teuvo cherished the family gatherings at the home on Clearwater Lake and the numerous trips he took with family members. Teuvo passed away unexpectedly at his home at Clearwater Lake, Manitoba, Saturday, July 23, 2011, age 66 years. Teuvo will be lovingly remembered and dearly missed by his wife Helena; daughter Sari Hellsten (Barney), grandchildren Marika, Barrett and great grandchildren Denika and Ashton; daughter Satu (Chris) Speelman and family Gillian Speelman (Pete) and their children Bayley, Amy; and Curt (Shaughn) Speelman and his children Kiefer and Kiernan. Teuvo also leaves to mourn in Finland his brother Tauno (Helena); niece Sari (Kari) Lauri, Heikki; nephews Ilpo (Ritva) Henkka, Riikka, Everett; Jussi (Heli) Sanna, Teemu; Hemmo. Teuvo “Terry” also leaves many friends and neighbours who will mourn his sudden passing. He will be greatly missed by all. “Kippis Teuvo” In keeping with Teuvo’s wishes, cremation took place and a celebration of Teuvo’s life was held Friday, July 29, 2011 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Teuvo and Helena’s residence at Clearwater Lake, Manitoba. If friends so desire, donations to the Concordia Hip and Knee Institute, c/o The Concordia Foundation, Inc., 1095 Concordia Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2K 3S8, would be appreciated by Terry’s family.
