Therese Dumas Obituary

On Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at the age of 73 years and after a courageous battle with cancer, our mother peacefully passed away at her home in Pukatawagan, Manitoba, surrounded by family and friends. Our mother was born Saturday, April 8, 1939 in Prayer River, Manitoba to George and Harriet Bighetty. She was united in marriage to Armand Dumas, September 17, 1959. They spent 40 glorious years together and raised 12 children, along with grandson Jimmy Dean. Most of the years were spent with family and friends at their favorite home away from home at Halfway Island, where they would hunt, fish, pick berries and just enjoy the abundance of what nature had to offer. The tradition continued after the passing of our father, where mom would continue spending the summers at Halfway Island with her children and the many grandchildren who adored her. Her younger years were spent at the Sturgeon Landing Residential School, where she returned home at the age of 16 years. Mom enjoyed spending her teen years helping her mother who was disabled. Mom enjoyed telling stories of our grandparents and spoke so fondly and lovingly of all the adventures they had. Over the years she never lost sight on what was important and she kept in close contact with her best friends Lucille Sinclair, Marie Adele Colomb, Lena Colomb and Margaret Francois (until her passing). She spend a lot of time with Mary Ann Dumas, she called “nechiwamiskweem” whom she loved dearly. She enjoyed he trips to Lac St. Anne and was fascinated by the beauty of the country. After her long trips from St. Anne’s, she would tell her children and grandchildren about her trip and the impact it made on her. Mom was a strong believer in the Catholic faith and welcomed the Lord and Saviour in her heart. She attended mass every Sunday without fail. Mom was a very humble woman, always giving and never expecting in return. Her greatest enjoyment was spending time with family, celebrating special occasions. Mom was kind hearted and a truly compassionate woman. She will truly be missed by all who came into contact with her. Her expertise and amazing skill in making a daily batch of bannock and a tasty dish to be accompanied will be missed by all who visited her home. As hard as it was and hurtful to bear the thought of leaving her children, grandchildren and friends, she accepted with dignity and thanked the Lord for her chosen demise. Mom was at peace and instructed all to not let her grandkids suffer in anyway, shape or form, but to be surrounded by the same love, kindness, giving, and compassion as she had shared. Therese is survived by her children Mike (Barb) and family, Barbara and family, Patrick (Donna) and family, Virginia (Danny) and family, Norman (Nancy) and family, Willie (Claudette) and family, Fred (Georgina), Lydia (Arnold) and family, Dennis (Lynn) and family, Veronique (Vance) and family, Mary Ann (Charlie) and family; brothers Stanley, Theodore and Bruno Bighetty; brothers-in-law Dennis Dumas, Mathew Fontaine, Elie McDonald; sisters-in-law Angelique Dumas, Mary Ann Dumas, Marie Clare Dumas.
