Valerie Ward Obituary

Valerie passed away peacefully June 25th, 2016 at St. Anthony’s Hospital. She enjoyed ten extra years of life, cherishing every moment she was given, after receiving unexpected news from her heart specialist in 2006. Although Valerie grew up as a city kid in Winnipeg, her time spent on the farm as a child left her loving the rural life. After attending Red River College and obtaining her LPN in nursing she moved to small town McCreary to begin her nursing career. It was in McCreary she met Bill, after a chance encounter with her having to tend to his brother‘s rather embarrassing situation in the emergency room. There was mention of glass having to be removed, and him having a hard time sitting for a while. Following their marriage they settled in McCreary, where Shelley was born in 1975, and Kyle followed in 1976. With Bill’s parents living next door there was always an extra set of hands around to help with the kids. In 1977 the family moved north to Wanless when Bill took a job with the Parks Branch at Clearwater Lake. Son Scott was born in 1979, when Bill and the other kids had to hide from a Tornado while trying to get into the hospital to see Val. The friends she made in Wanless are still some of her closest friends. Once the kids started school a move to The Pas was necessary. Although Val had been a stay at home mom for several years she decided it was time to work again. She ran a home daycare for years with several of the kids still calling her Auntie Val. Once the three kids were in school fulltime her love of helping people led her to join the Workplace and work with the disabled clients. She loved the time she spent training them to work at various locations around town, and in the high school cafeteria. She was known for her cooking and sense of humor in the café, although having her there meant her own kids couldn’t skip classes and hang out there. After a short hiatus to run the bus depot, she returned to the workplace and ran the Thrift shop for close to a decade. Cherishing the time she spent with both her coworkers and the people she was training. She loved talking to new people in the store daily, and often came home with some interesting stories. After retiring on disability she focused her time on her seven grandchildren (Hope, Faith, Zander, Kali, Carter, Addison, and Piper). She loved spending time with them doing the simple things like coloring, singing songs, playing games, and camping at the lake. She took the time to make them clothing, or knit them hats and mitts. In the past couple years she tried to make each kid a special quilt for them to enjoy. She loved when all seven lived right across the street for a couple years which allowed her to see them daily. When Kyle’s kids moved to Melville, Val loved going to the farm to visit them and their livestock. Val always claimed that it was the grandkids that kept her going the past ten years. Val loved to travel all through her life. When the kids were younger it was yearly camping trips all over Canada and the US. Her and Bill took several trips out to the west coast to see her sister Vicki in Mission, and his brother Dave in Kitimat. She enjoyed a trip up to Churchill with Bill and some friends as well. In 2006 she was able to go on what she considered her dream vacation to Australia when Shelley won two tickets to Sydney. For two weeks she got to visit with relatives, spend time at the ocean, and see the east coast of Australia. She was able to go out on an Island tour of the Great Barrier Reef on her 55th birthday. She always talked about making a trip back there someday. She also loved her trips to Vegas with friends and family. Everyone who knew Val would describe her as a kind and generous person. She loved helping people, and this was evident in her choice of careers, as well as the time she spent with her kids and grandkids. Although she had to slow down the past 10 years she still made sure she enjoyed life, and made sure the people around her did as well.
