Viola Moen Obituary

“Marie” was born Viola Mary Brauner on the old homestead in the RM of Birch River, Manitoba Tuesday, August 17, 1915. Big families, back then, she was the eldest of 11 siblings. She took all her schooling at the Drury School in Birch River. As a young teenager Marie went to work for the sisters at Harlington in the Lavender Hills at Swan River as a Nurse’s Aide. She worked in the hospital there taking care of patients, rolling bandages, etc, and in the O.R. The sisters already had a Sister Mary working there, so they renamed Mom, "Sister Marie”, so they wouldn’t get mixed up in the O.R. The name Marie became second nature to everyone and she remained Marie the rest of her life. Since Marie was allergic to ether in the O.R., and got nosebleeds from it; she obtained a job as a travelling companion to a lady in a wheelchair bound for The Pas. When her job as a travelling companion was over she got a job in a photo shop on Edwards Avenue. While in The Pas, Marie met our dad Arthur Moen and they were married at the Bishop’s Palace, The Pas on July 24, 1937. Marie and Art then moved to Cranberry Portage. As Art was a trapper at Elbow Lake, Marie spent a couple winters at Elbow Lake, moving back to Cranberry Portage in the spring time. They made their home in Cranberry Portage when their children had to start attending school and lived there until 1984. While living in Cranberry Portage Marie worked as a cabin girl at Athapap Lodge , a waitress and a cabin girl at Caribou Lodge and a seamstress at Frontier Collegiate, retiring in 1975. Marie and Art then moved to The Pas to a trailer on Reader Street and then to Valhalla Court in 1989. Marie liked to whistle, sing, draw, read, dance, do cross words and jig saw puzzles, gardening, and flowers, play cards and was an excellent seamstress. Marie passed away peacefully, with family by her side, Thursday, February 7, 2013, at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba, at the age of 97 years. Marie is survived by her son, Brooke (Barb) Moen of Kelowna; daughter, Gaylene Harapiak of The Pas; granddaughter, Heidi (Mike) Sharek of Edmonton; grandsons Richard, Darwin, and Warren Harapiak of The Pas; great granddaughters, Serena Harapiak of The Pas, Sophie and Aida Sharek of Edmonton; brothers, Harold Brauner of Birch River, Frank (Anne) Brauner of Kamloops, BC; sisters Nettie (Wally) Walpert of Vernon, BC, Ethel Harpe of Camrose, Alberta, Sophie Johnson of Whiterock, BC; sister-in-law Elza Brauner of Orlando, Florida; and numerous nieces and nephews. Marie was predeceased by her husband, Art Moen in 1993; infant son Simon; granddaughter, Jennifer; parents, Catherine and Arthur Brauner; brothers Johnny, Archie, Earl, Lester, Robert, and Carl Brauner; sister, Louise Bradley; and son-in-law Ben Harapiak. In keeping with Marie’s wishes, cremation took place and a service of remembrance to celebrate her life, will be held Monday, July 8, 2013, 11:00 am, at the Chapel of Hemauer Funeral Home, The Pas, Manitoba with Interment to follow at Lakeside Cemetery.
