William Atchison Obituary

William Wilfred “Bill” Atchison, passed away peacefully with family by his side Monday, September 11, 2017, at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba, at the age of 79 years. Bill was born Monday, October 4, 1937 at Bellsite, Manitoba, to parents Lenna and Roy Atchison. On March 2, 1963, Bill married Mabel Pettit and the couple had two sons Timothy and Kenneth. Through the years, Bill tried his hand at a variety of jobs and businesses such as restaurant, janitorial services, trucking and even spent five years as a correctional officer. Bill was mostly known as a construction worker. He could operate all kinds of equipment but was best known for his skill as a crane operator. As a crane operator he worked in the far north on the Dew Line, Churchill Forest Industries, Hydro dams, pipelines and most notably Pan American World Airways in Churchill, hoisting live rockets into the launching pad. Bill was involved with the Ag Society for years, helping out with the rodeo and also taking part in events such as pony chariot racing and bronco riding during his younger years. Bill was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. His family meant the world to him and he was happiest when they were all together at family get-togethers. In the last few years the highlight of his day was when he was able to see his great grandchildren. He loved babies and little kids. Bill retired in 1991 due to a heart condition. In December of 1998, Bill and Mabel moved from Cemetery Road to Ralls Island. He loved country life and watching the deer that visited our yard on a daily basis. In 2009, Bill suffered a serious stroke that left him without the ability to verbally communicate properly. Being a people person, this impairment was extremely hard on him but he managed fairly well with his limited speech and gestures. He was diagnosed with cancer in December 2016. Despite his failing health in the last few years, he managed to keep his sense of humor and smile. Bill will be greatly missed by his wife Mabel; two sons Tim and Ken (Celeste); five grandsons, Brady (Brittany), Cody (Sara), Dustin (Shania), Kenneth (Jordyn), Gregory (Nicole); six great grandchildren Bella, Blaze, Scarlet, Nixon, Ava and Paisley Jane. Bill is also survived by brothers Norville (Elaine), Gerald (Barb), Dale (Barb); sisters Inez (Terry), Olive; sister-in-law Gladys (David); as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews. In keeping with family wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of Bill’s life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Pas Health Complex Foundation, Inc., Memorial Fund, Palliative Care Division, Box 541, The Pas, Manitoba, R9A 1K6, would be appreciated by Bill’s family.
