Zacheus Umpherville Obituary

Zacheus Umpherville, know to many as Ke`sa new was born Tuesday, January 2, 1934 in Cedar Lake, Manitoba to Edith and Patrick Umpherville. He was schooled in Rivers Manitoba. Zacheus was united in marriage to Rubina Lachose, December 29, 1952 in Cedar Lake. They were married by Rev. Percy James Pryke. Zacheus and his family relocated to Easterville in 1964 as a result of Manitoba Hydro raising Cedar Lake. Throughout his life Zacheus worked as a Custodian at the E.J. Johnson School, Fisherman, Councillor for the Metis side, Probation Officer, Justice member, Trapper, Carpenter, worked at the Cook Shack, was Night Watchman (while the tower was being built), Lay Reader and most recently as an Elder for Chemawawin Trapper Negotiations. Zacheus loved meeting new people and was well known for shaking their hand and greeting them with a smile. He loved telling stories about the good old days at the Old Post, singing Cree Hymns, family visits and most of all driving around and enjoying the scenery. In October of 2009, Zacheus moved to the Rod McGillivary Memorial Care Home and July 7, 2011 accepted the Lord as his personal savior. Zacheus passed away with his children and grandchildren by his side, Thursday, July 14, 2011 at St. Anthony’s Hospital, The Pas, Manitoba, age 77 years. Dad, Choom, Chapan, will be sadly missed by his children, grandchildren and great, grandchildren. Zacheus is survived by his daughters Doreen (Richard) Bourassa, Judy Munroe, Iona (Peter) Ballantyne, Bernice Lavallee and granddaughter Zina Bourassa, who he raised as his own; son Esau Umpherville. He is also survived by grandchildren Jocelyn (Clayton) George, Sheldon (Catherine) Bourassa, Jodi Bourassa, Sonny Bourassa, Desmond Munroe, Johnny (Alicia) Munroe, Pernell Umpherville, Darryl (Kristy) Umpherville, Sherri-lynn (Joseph) Umpherville; great grandchildren Clinton, Denzel, Shanaya, Leah, Desnae, Deslynn, Desmond Jr., Denessa, Nevaeh, Pernell Jr.; godchildren John Miles, Bruce George, Karen Thomas, Clayton Challis George, David Lavallee, Rodney Captain, Pauline Captain, Gabrie Dorion. Zacheus is survived by sister Cora (Edward) Thomas; brothers Arthur Umpherville, Roy (Mary) Umpherville, Leonard Umpherville; close friends Malcolm Thomas, Lawrence Catt, Edward Lachose, Caroline Thomas, Benji Cook (Grand Rapids), Gerald Houle Jr.; plus many nieces, nephews and other relatives too numerous to mention. Zacheus was predeceased by his wife Rubina Umpherville (2005); son Barney Umpherville (2008); infant sons; parents Edith and Patrick Umpherville; brothers Esau, William, Sternie; sisters Doreen, Sylvia, Emma; son-in-law Gilbert Munroe; granddaughter Gilbertina Munroe.
