Lena Johnson Winnipeg, Manitoba Obituary

Lena Johnson

It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Our Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister and Friend, Lena Johnson on March 27,2020. She was predeceased by her parents, grandparents, husband Martin (1968), grand daughter Ainsley ( Feb.16/2020) and many friends. Lena is survived by her sister Mary, son Miles (Kim), daughter Marilyn, grandchildren, Chelsea (Ryan) Matthew (Kelly) Melissa (Chris), Amber (David) and Christopher; as well as eight great-grandchildren, Cara, Hannah, Eliana, Aaron, Charlie, Theo, Max and Dottie and many family members and friends. Lena was born on May 25, 1934 and grew up in McCreary, Manitoba. Lena and Martin purchased their home on Gateway Road (1959) where their children were raised. They soon became very dear friends with their neighbors, Gene and Chris Gladys. They spent countless days talking over the fence ( where Gene would always leave a biscuit for Lena’s furry friends), going for coffee, or meeting up at KP mall up until her time of passing. She spent her life working extremely hard and dedicated more than 37 years to working at the Bank of Montreal. In 1995 she retired from the bank and began her second career as a retiree working for God. Starting in 1995, she was serving God in Novorossiysk, Russia for a year with Avant Ministries. She continued to serve God in Bible distributions and then in 1998 she returned to Russia for 5 months in Women’s ministries. She loved to travel, going to Spain, Morocco, Cuba, Hawaii, Germany, Ukraine. She also loved to travel with her sister Mary, taking Fall trips to places such as New York, Boston and Palm Springs, and to Eastern Canada, notably, P.E.I. and Nova Scotia. She made sure that her children had wonderful summer trips as they grew up, traveling to many places in North America. She also made many trips to B.C to visit her daughter, grand children and great grand children, her sister, and extended Johnson family members. One trip in particular that was so enjoyable for her was when she went to Israel with her dear friend Carol Miles, and they toured on a bus full of Pastors! ( Mom must have been in Heaven!) For about 15 years Lena volunteered at the Winnipeg Adult Education Centre teaching English as a second language to immigrants. Pearl at UGM became a dear friend to her and they volunteered weekly in the clothing bank and she also volunteered with Anne at the Family Life Centre. She developed lasting friendships with many people there and touched so many lives. Lena loved visiting her family in B.C.Her grand daughter Chelsea will always cherish their lunch or dinner dates at Half Moon in Lockport and the many funny conversations (sometimes mild disagreements) that they shared. We know that Lena and grand daughter Ainsley loved and looked forward to their special coffee times at Tim Hortons. Lena and Ainsley had a special relationship that continues now as they are both free of pain and suffering, together in Heaven. Lena was an incredibly generous woman. She was incredibly strong and had a great sense of humour. She was loved by many and loved her friends and family with her whole heart. Lena was the definition of a selfless person. She had a strong Christian faith and attended Kilcona Park Alliance Church, where she developed long lasting relationships with such friends as Anne Diachun, Carol Miles, Marilyn Friesen and Marie Halchakar. Special thanks to Aunt Trudy Johnson and J-Lynn Johnson for their visits to Lena that meant so much to her and our family. She will be deeply missed by many. We take comfort knowing she is now in the hands of God. Memorial details will follow once we are able to hold a memorial for her due to the current COVID19 crisis.
